You've got to admit, thats realy quite a tuching scene ^^

Very nice job on that ralph!

It accomplishes two things:

1) It wraps up Colin's problem, and,

2) Shows that Master Millfolk sided with his wife, judging by the look he gave Quentyn as he was headed back to the bathroom.

Wow, that was amazing. Such a good strip. Bravo Ralph, Bravo.

It's also important. It has implications for Quentyn's credibility. There are now people in very high circles who fully realize how competent Quentyn is, and that means scoring his next gig won't be anywhere near as tough as any prior.

Go back to Quentyn's first meeting with the Millfolk, at that party. Note how rich he and the Wizard realized they were, and what social circles they were dealing with.

This is VERY important.

Y'know, given the current attitude of 'Mother Millfolk' (NOT Lady Millfolk), I have to wonder how Lord Millfolk turned out as well as he did. She has obviously forgotten everything she ever knew about raising kits (if she ever knew it in the first place).

She always wanted to....but she'd been convinced by "an educated idiot" that all her maternal instincts were wrong. That's why she was so conflicted emotionally. That's why her relationship with Lord M was so strained. That's what Quentyn learned that night in the kitchen. She's been freed of that emotional baggage so she can now be the devoted, loving mother she really is and not give a crap if it's the "proper" way the Lady of a large house should act.

And it's absolutely evident in the totally peaceful look on her face as she sleeps in the chair holding Colin. She's at peace with herself as she is comforting her son.

And I LOVE the little floating lux "night lights".

If a Raconan kit has a night terror, would a human be able to see it?

I've been playing with story idea, a story about a human from our world who somehow adopts a baby Racconan and raises it as their own son or daughter. The human parent (or parents) would live way out in the remote wilderness of Alaska (so the kit would be easy to hide from the general public). The kit would just appear at their house mysteriously. (You know, the old finding-a-baby-in-a-basket-at-your-doorstep thing.) The parents know nothing about the Rac Cona Daimh (unless they happen to come across a certain online comic ), and they know nothing of Lux. In fact, at first they assume that the kit is some sort of animal, and they treat it as a pet, but when the kit starts talking (surprise!), life becomes very different for them. (They'd probably assume that the kit is an alien from outer space, and technically they'd be right.) When they discover that it's a sentient being, they would do their best to give the kit a good human-style education, complete with high-level mathematics and physics. In this story, I would have it where the parents are Christians, and when the kit's Lux abilities start emerging, it would be a shocking experience for them all, especially for the child. (The parents aren't mean; they wouldn't take a Salem Witch Trial approach to it. They'd be as open-minded as possible. Still, it's got to be scary discovering that your son or daughter can perform what looks like magic.) At first, the kit would be scared and ashamed of its Lux abilities, but eventually the family would piece the truth together through daily observations, through knowledge of the sciences, and by simply following their hearts. (seeing the Fruits of the Spirit emerge, as the Bible would say) The parents wouldn't be able to dispel the kit's night terrors in the sort of ways a Racconan parent would, yet I think they would end up dispelling them nonetheless. (with just love and determination)

I don't know if I'll write this story out because it'd end up being extremely sentimental and a little sad, but I enjoy it in my imagination, at least.

Since the whole problem was from the latest modern theories, they may not have existed back when Mother Millfolk raised her son.

After all, Dr. Spock didn't mess up the raising of his peers, just the children of his peers.

Seconded.

As speculated, Mother Millfolk tended to leave her children's upbringing to the nannies..... who happened to be generally from the lower middle class. That, combined with a father who put him to work early in the family business, is what led to Lord Millfolk's "man of the working people" personality.

It closes the whole episode with hard proof that it all worked out for the best.

Quentyn DID walk away with the job unfinished, but only because he knew the final step was best done by mom and that she fully realized it.
