BTW - Has Quentyn retrieved his loaner sword, or does he have a new loaner? (I assume that he didn't put a handle on the curtain rod :-) )

Quentyn's only about 14, maybe 15yo and I think Kestrel and he are about the same age. Meribeth, the barmaid I'm sure is considerably older, probably by several years. I don't really foresee any kind of relationship between them other than Quentyn not embarassing the hell out of himself every time he tries to compliment her. He has a pretty heavy crush on her but I don't see it going anywhere.

And I'm pretty sure that's his original loaner sword that somebody retrieved from the sewer when they went down to dismantle the lab.

Kestrel and Quent.... Erm.

They'll be good friends, but... not like that, methinks.

Either someone new we don't know about...

...or Nessie. Its classic fare, the daughter of the guy in charge marries her rescuer.

She knows that much :D

Remember that different human cultures view "adulthood" as being radically different ages, very often down at puberty or so. Even here in the US, we often hear of early teens "growing up early" where one or both parents are sick or something and they take over the running of the family successfully.

"Adult" is as much a matter of culture as biology.

Rac Conan culture as Ralph has described it puts Quentyn at adulthood. Admittedly young adulthood...but that's still going to affect much of his attitudes.

That was beautiful. What a wonderful ending. Lets keep the good times rolling. Very well done, RH. God bless, everyone!

1. Nessie.

2. The Sword.

3. The Next Big Plot.

4. The Evil Guy's Students.
And don't forget:

5. His (possible) relationship with Kestrel (and dare I add the barmaid too?)
6. Linnaeus and the Gragum

And there's really no reason not to have retrieved the loaner sword - it was at the bottom of the manhole where Irons found him, and they went down and took apart the lab. While the sword may not have been an articact or an heirloom, neither was it the sort of thing you would leave behind without a second thought. I think we may be getting carried away here with a plot detail that's really not that important.
