Well, keep in mind that that Psalm was written by David. David was, at least at one point in his life, an Action Hero. Sure he had his guys with him, but I rather think that he was the 'lead from the front' type (I mean after that business with setting an example of what trusting God in war should be with that whole 'Goliath' business...). Not to mention he played double agent at one time, fleeing his own country because Saul was gunning for him, and making nice with the Philistenes (I'm pretty sure it was them...) and then going on raids against some people (can't remember if it was the same nation or not, might have been their allies), and claiming all the while that he had been raiding Isrealite cities (I hope I am remembering this reasonably correctly)... yeah, the bit about "the valley of the shadow of death" doesn't seem to me to be anything close to a flip comment.

So I would say that this is a most appropriate choice of quote now that I think about it.

I think its also used as the last rights isn't it? Sort of an admitance that he knows he's going to die, even if he dosn't in the end.

Interesting Factoid... The "Valley of the Shadow of Death," refers to a valley in northern Israel by Mount Hermon (If I remember this right...) ranging from Dan to Hazor. All the northen and eastern agressors had to march through that valley. It was full of nice fields, but any army will pillage and ruin that kind of land... and it's people. Considering the amount of warfare in that time... Valley of Death was a very apt name for it.

Also, the rest of Davids history you mentioned, dead on. 10 bonus points for you.

Actually if it's a bit cold down there, that would help slow the blood flow from his wounds, as well as slow his metabolism just a bit. These factors could very well be conducive to his survival.

Quite true. And there was a hill on one end where each time such invaders came in the Israeli army would camp out and try and fight from the high ground (and they soon fortified it; an initial fort may have actually been Egyptian and pre-Israeli). It became known as "Har (Mountain) Megiddo" for "Mountain of colliding armies" or "Mountain of warfare".

Later translated as Armageddon.
