Between Worlds Mun Discussion (OOC comments here)
To be more specific, the watchtowers were completed first... but the walls in between were never quite finished up. As the tallest structures in Sanctuary, they became the preferred tenancies of high-end weathermages and firemages (who serve as the city's "fire department"), and were quickly bought up at discount prices
some are set in the completed inner wall, some are set in the outer uncompleted wall.
The GUARDtowers are shorter, stumpier towers scattered around the city that more or less serve as barracks and headquarters for the city Guardsmen.
Both sets of towers are the product of the first century after the Seven Villages was formed--- shortly after they defeated the human invaders and created the swamp and the wall of mists, and while they were still fearful of yet another invasion. (Back then, a Rac Conan who wasn't paranoid was generally a short lived Rac Conan.) When a century and a half passed without another human invasion, they delayed, then ceased the rather expensive building project.
The Tumbledowns are, yes, the slums. Definitely rougher neighborhood. Typical of most cities, only more-- well--- vertical. The buidings are close and tall, with countless elevated streets, ramps, flyways, walkways and even rope ladders over, under, around, and through everything. The lower-income, being unable to buy more land, simply found it more cost-effective to build straight UP... till the tumbledowns was as many-tiered as a rainforest.... er, with muggers. There are lower levels that never see the sun....
(This is of course why it's called "the tumbledowns"--- because the whole dang mess looks like it could come tumbling down around your ears at any moment.)

It's a rough sketch by Ennias Longscript (i.e. Ralph's narrator alter-ego when he gives background info on the Rac Conans, their land, society, etc.), and thus shouldn't be taken as completely accurate. Ralph did mention that the measurements of the entire Seven Villages and the surrounding land were about two or three times what Ennias wrote down. Small bit of that ol' paranoia coming back.
Very likely there are some smaller outposts with meager populations that are not on his map, as he was pretty much given a tour of the Seven Villages, the ones that are highest in population density. You may notice there are no towns or other such places marked in the swamp. Yet, we know that there are some Rac Conans living there, albeit they may not exactly be prospering. Having to fend off all manner of creatures, not to mention the Gragum, doesn't really help your economy take off.
A map doesn't always have to show everything so long as it shows some of the more important things... like a dragon's lair or an active volcano. You wouldn't want a map that leaves that out and shows all the forests, now would you?

Well, for all Adam knows he could have a learning disability (dislexia for example) that has slowed his learning rate in that particular area to the point wear he hasn't yet mastered enough to read signs. Same thing might go if he was blinded at a very young age (pulled a pot of boiling water off the stove as a toddler onto his face???) and only a few years ago did the family save up enough to pay to get seriously started on the process of getting his eyeballs regenerated. Regrowing a lens and iris might be a more ticklish process than regrowing say, a fingertip... assuming that regeneration (as opposed to simply slightly speeding up natural healing) is even within the ability of lux.Adam blinked. "Can't read the...?" He gave Falcon a meaningful look. Rayne couldn't read the signs. That could only mean one thing: he wasn't from the Seven Villages.

Well, I know that there are settlements, but surely not that many? I remember him saying it would be bigger (I am reading this topic) but that would only mean there'd be more land inbetween, not less. I'm just surprised that more people don't choose to go out and stake a claim.

*Whew.* Sorry about the delay. I've finally un-busied myself, but I need to ask RH, and you all, a few questions first.
First, RH, what is the state of the numerousness of Yeshua's names? Does he have hundreds, like our God? Do they ever refer to Him as "God"? Which names are the most common? Are some held to be more sacred than others? Are some of them simply common nouns ("Redeemer", "Shepherd", "Author and Finisher of our faith")?
To what degree of the populace of the Seven Villages believe in Yeshua? Is it socially acceptable not to? And do most of these believers "walk the walk" as well as "talk the talk", or are they "Christmas and Easter" church-goers? And what holidays, if any, were set down because of religion?
What constitutes crude language in the Seven Villages? I'm talking about it all: crass, uber crass, and "they-that-shall-not-be-said". Do they share any curse words with us? How socially acceptable are they, and are there punishments for saying them in the wrong circumstances/places?
Finally, to everyone in the RP:
I have a character in mind, but he's not really "good" in any sense of the word. At this point in his life, he's perverted, womanizing, has no inhibitions about using any word in front of anyone, may have a few murders under his belt, and a few things more that I'd rather secret. In short: he's crazy. Not Hannibal crazy; not constant laughter crazy. He's in full control of himself and his emotions, but he's crazy. He has little to no regard for any life, human or rac'conan, and is basically out to achieve his own ends. However, he'll often do seemingly nice things for no reason at all, expressing the vagueness of character needed in a truly insane, yet dangerous, person.
I have no intentions of him being a true villain, or even a "sub-boss" of sorts. I'm not sure how he'll turn out, in fact.
What I need from you all is permission to write things I myself would never say in real life. No graphic sex scenes, of course. I'm merely talking about my character's use of language. I could bypass the censors, do single-character censoring with asterisks, or censor it completely (as in, letting the forum's censor do all the work).

Yeshua is actually the hebrew name for Jesus. It can also be translated Joshua.
No profanity, please. That's what the @#$%@@!! keys are for
The land in between the major cities is farmland, orchards, and small clusters of houses here and there.... there ISN'T any land that isn't privately owned (which explains why it's generally in good shape.)

*wince* I don't want to know how you came up with that idea.DracoDei wrote: Same thing might go if he was blinded at a very young age (pulled a pot of boiling water off the stove as a toddler onto his face???) and only a few years ago did the family save up enough to pay to get seriously started on the process of getting his eyeballs regenerated.

What about my other questions, though (especially concerning the Seven Villages' passion for Christianity/lack thereof)?

Um, to be honest, your character sounds like he has good reasons to end up being executed. Honestly, what makes you think a bunch of uber-conservative sentient raccoons are gonna tolerate even one murder, especially when they're Christians? They probably believe in justice as well as loving thy neighbor.
The swearing and womanizing you could probably get away with. Still, some of the others might not take to him. Adam in particular still feels a need to uphold the law, despite being kicked out of the Guard.
Just some points to think over.

Oh, trust me, I agree. Thing is, no one knows it was he who actually murdered them.StrangeWulf13 wrote:Um, to be honest, your character sounds like he has good reasons to end up being executed. As he should. My character has been disciplined before, by both officials and citizens, in jail or in a back alley, for crimes less severe than murder (public disruption, most of the time). It explains why he never stays in one place too long.StrangeWulf13 wrote:The swearing and womanizing you could probably get away with. Still, some of the others might not take to him. Also, he's no amateur in battle. I'm not entirely sure yet, but I'm thinking he wields two daggers (a rac'conan dagger, not a human one). He prefers the more subtle approach rather than brute strength.
To sum it up: he likes pushing people's buttons, and when they've finally had enough, he can defend himself for a while, depending on how strong they are and how many there are.

Oh, I'm gonna find me a pretty tail.
Gonna make her moan and wail.
That's what I do; I never fail!
I land 'em every time.
Even before I adapted him for this RP, he never was one for subtlety.
On another topic: I suggest taking off your signature when posting in the RP, for anyone who hasn't done it yet. Make sure that box next to "Attach signature" doesn't have a check in it when ya post. It kinda disrupts the natural flow. Just a tip for anyone who wants to participate or already is.

Don't forget Kathryn. I don't think she'd take too kindly to it either.StrangeWulf13 wrote:Ooookaaaaay... that's pretty bawdy by anyone but the hedonists' standards. Ya might wanna keep him from singin' that anywhere near Rayne and Adam when they're together. He might suddenly find the former Guardman's fist down his throat, trying to yank out his vocal cords.
