Kyvan nodded and closed the door. He leaned against the wall and paused before he started to walk down the hall. Heading back downstairs he met the waitress coming upstairs with a tray of food.
"Marybeth," Kyvan said with a smile, "Your son's about the same age as that kit that came in tonight, right?"
"Yes, he is," she replied, a little cautious.
"Good," Kyvan said, "Would you happen to have any clothes that Rayne could borrow? His are soaked thru and he doesn't have a spare set."
"Oh," she said, a little surprised, "I think that I do. Let me check the back room after I deliver this."
"Great," Kyvan said, "I'll meet you down at the bar, then."
Kyvan continues heading down the stairs and back into the bar. He pulls up a stool and waits for the waitress to return.

In the next room, Kathryn silently padded back to the bed in her nightgown, and gently set the mug she had placed against the wall to listen in on the conversation back down on the nightstand. A strange thing, curiosity is, that it will drive those under its power to do things they would never dream of otherwise -- a compelling force that dives beyond all bounds of reason with the promise of a higher ecstasy of knowledge ripe for the taking of those who would but dare fate.
She sat down upon the bed and began thinking over what she had heard. Rayne certainly seemed nice enough after what had happened downstairs. He had pried a bit too far into her life for her liking, but she was hardly in a position to complain. That, and she was fairly certain Kyvan had deduced her troubles anyway. She could only hope that he bore her no malice, or this could be a very awkward situation indeed.
Sanctuary? It was anything but that for me. The city of seven lights is only receptive while you've still money in your pocket. she thought bitterly. He certainly didn't look to be much better off than I in that department. At least I do have a few friends there yet, and he may need some. I'm not sure I fully trust Kyvan yet, but if they're going... it's not like I've got pressing business elsewhere.
Kathryn draped out her snow-soaked clothing over the fireplace to dry and stoked the fire with an extra log or two before climbing under the blankets.
I suppose I'll be going back sooner than I'd thought.
And then no further thoughts came to her as azure dreams claimed her mind and whisked her away from the waking troubles of the world.
For a few hours, at least.

Accidentally forgetting to lock the door at first, as Kyvan had asked, Rayne went back to staring into the fire. He was still very cold underneath and, now that he was sure he was alone, he undid the clasps on the front of the coat, stood up and allowed it to slide off him onto the floor with a damp thud. Immediately he could feel the fire

Adam saw Kyvan come out and talk to the waitress about something. It probably involved clothing; the lad was clearly soaked, but he wouldn't open his cloak at all. What he was hiding underneath he had no idea, but he didn't want anyone to see it, even though he was probably wet down to his skin.
He didn't say anything, but sat there brooding a bit, ignoring the others' conversation as they chatted about various things. He was barely aware that they were talking about the priest going out among the gragum, and the Questor was mentioned once or twice. All he could think about was that boy and his secret. What was he hiding that made him so afraid? Maybe he was a bit paranoid, but no one acted like that over small things. If they thought it was important enough, they'd have every right to be nervous.
Adam cast a glance over the room, measuring and analyzing the patrons. On the whole, they all seemed harmless enough, or at least of a good nature. He wasn't sure about the weather mage who'd been showing off earlier (and had practically half-frozen everyone with his foolish antics), but it was a threat that could be dealt with if necessary. Not too many knew what his gauntlets could do. That was one good result of his paranoia; he never worried about being well-armed.
Finishing his meal, he took one last swig of his drink, put the mug down with a gentle thump, and got up. With a determined look, he walked over to Kyvan, his mind made up.
"Kyvan! I need to speak to you, please." He fought off the instinct to look around as he leaned in close. "It's about the boy, Kyvan."

He sighed deeply. "Mostly my behavior this evening. I had an, uh, 'incident' in Sanctuary involving some street punks. I let down my guard. I'm lucky to still have two good eyes." He stroked the bottom half of the scar over his left eye, the memory of light glinting off steel, searing pain, and then... nothing.
"It's affected me more than I care to admit. I'm starting to look at kits like they're spies for humans. And you probably heard the rumors about my discharge from the Guardsmen." He grunted. "One flies off the handle and its suddenly everybody's business how 'sane' we are. Damn politicians.
"Anyway, I'd like to apologize for how I've been acting. It was not right. I probably scared the poor boy half to death. I wouldn't be surprised if he had night terrors." He looked Kyvan in the eye, fire glowing in his own. "But I swear, if there's anything I can do to make it up to either of you, I will. Just name it."

Kyvan is taken aback.
"I ... I don't know what to say, Adam," he says, looking shocked, "Of everything you could say, I did not expect that."
Kyvan stands up and looks Adam back in the eye.
"I, also, have to appologize for my behavior," Kyvan said, "I was very stand-off-ish when you came up to us. I admit, your reputation preceeded you and I did not even consider that it might not be the whole truth. For that, I am sorry."
Kyvan holds out his hand.
"I know that Rayne will need more help than I can give him," Kyvan says, "And I can think of no one better suited to that than a former Guardsman."
OOC: cue dramic music.

Adam takes the hand and shakes it. "Nice to have someone on my side for once." He smirks and lets go, hooking his thumbs in his belt. "I don't expect to be told everything right away. That's for the boy to do. When he's ready, of course.
"I'll help however I can. I still have a few friends left among the Guardsmen, and I might be able to call in a few favors." He grins. "I might have to cancel my trip though if the boy ain't headin' for Freeman Downs. I'm sure my friend will understand. Important business and all."
He frowns, glancing at the floor for a moment, sighing, and looks Kyvan in the eye again. "I hate to ask, but is there any chance of being paid for my services? I still have enough to last me for a while, but I don't want to get too confident. I've seen fools end up poor that way."
He awaits Kyvan's answer, feeling a bit guilty for asking, but knew it was better to bring it up now rather than later.

Kyvan looks at him with a small smile on his face.
"My friend," he says, "I wish I could tell you that there will be a vast treasure awaiting us at journey's end, but I cannot. I still don't know exactly why Rayne is troubled, so I cannot tell you what may be involved.
"All I know," he says, smile fading, "Is that this is right, whether we become richer or poorer because of it."

Adam grunts, his way of maintaining neutral ground between a laugh and a growl. "Do I look like a starry-eyed wannabe Questor to you? I ain't asking for treasure, just possible compensation for my time and effort. I'll still tag along if you'd like, but it would be nice to line my pockets a bit. I don't wanna get even close to being poor."
He takes a seat at the bar and gestures for Kyvan to join him. "Anyway, we'll handle that later, if it comes up. Give me whatever info you can or feel comfortable sharing. I'll tell you how I think I can help." He glances around at the room, his paranoia kicking in again. "On second thought, perhaps we should discuss this in more... private company?"

Falcon has been listening, and now joins them, clearing his throat. "How about my table back in the corner? More comfortable than the stairs. And... does he need someone who knows his way around the Seven Villages? I got the impression that he can't even read the guideposts. I've got some deliveries to finish, but I'd like to help, too. Something about the boy... "

Adam gives the archivist an irritated glare. "Nice ears, messenger boy." He walks briskly over to the table and takes him by the shirt collar, keeping his voice low so the other two can't hear him well. "If you're coming on this trip, you're going to follow my rules. Rule Number 1: Never talk in public about private matters. Now c'mon."
He yanks the hapless Falcon by his shirt, trying to get him to follow towards the stairs.

A hand falls heavily on Adam's shoulder and holds him in an iron grip.
"Let. Him. Go," Kyvan says, very forcefully, "Rule #2: If you lay hands on your allies, they will no longer be your allies."
Kyvan looks over at Flacon.
"Discretion is needed here," he says, "So let's all calmly move into the stairwell."

Adam sighs heavily and releases Falcon, then moves towards the stairs, not in a good mood. "I'm just trying to do damage control, Kyvan. The less people know about this before we get started, the better off we'll be. The lad's not hiding a piece of bread under that cloak of his."
He casts a glare at the archivist. "If you can't keep your mouth shut, keep it low. Rumors fly far and fast around here." He walks in a bit of a huff, more irritated with himself than the other two. The paranoia was still affecting him. What really worried him was that somewhere along the way, it wouldn't be paranoia anymore.

"I know you meant well," Kyvan says once they are allone, "But grabbing someone and forcing them out of the room will only attract attention."
He looks the other two in the eye in turn.
"I have committed myself to Rayne's well being," he says, "And I have done so for my own reasons. However, to ensure his well being, I believe that the two of you need to be involved.
"From what I know, Rayne is to meet someone here tonight. He's supposedly a wizard that helped him previously. However, if they do not meet up tonight, Rayne is to meet him in Sactuary City. It is getting late and I don't think that this wizard is going to show up tonight, but if he does, I don't want him to leave with the boy without knowing what his intentions are.
"If he doesn't show, then I have to take Rayne to Sactuary. I would like to two of you to accompany us on that journey, if you can. I don't know what the time-frame is, but I think we may be able to go thru Freeman Downs and then head to Sanctuary after both of you conclude your business there.
"There is no payment involved, but I need your help in this. Can I count on you both?"
OOC: That was a little long-winded, wasn't it?

OOC: Not so much as some of Astral's postings...
Adam nodded his agreement. "Sounds good to me; I have contacts in Sanctuary who can help out. Not all of them are Guardsmen, but they're good people. They'd be willing to help a kit in trouble." He shifted his weight a little, more out of discomfort than nervousness. "I don't know too many wizards in this part of the world who'd have bad intentions, Kyvan. Most of them leave politics well enough alone, save when the councils need advice.
"No, if this wizard gives us trouble, he'll be a very foolish human who found his way in undetected somehow, and will shortly find a plague of ringtailed mages on his hide." He grinned. "I'd like to see one try something, just to laugh when he's put out of commission within the week. It'd be a story worth telling for years to come."
He turned to Falcon, still smiling, but definitely serious. "What have you to say, archivist? Think you could find a way to help?"

Falcon straightens his clothing and then returns one of the ex-Guardsman's own knives to him with a lopsided grin. "I daresay I could." He's keeping his voice down to a near-whisper now. "The boy wants to move around without attracting attention, right? Best way to do that is to stay off the main roads. There are shortcuts and hidden trails if you know them... and I do."

Kyvan smiles.
"Wonderful," he says, "I thank you both. Yes, I think avoid attention would be the best thing for now."
Kyvan pauses as he notices the waitress's head pokearound the corner.
"Kyvan," she says, "I have those clothes you wanted."
"Thank you," Kyvan says to her, then turns back to Adam and Falcon, "I suggest you two go back to the bar and watch for this wizard. I'll get these dry clothes up to Rayne and see what else I can learn."
Kyvan walks over to the waitress, who hands him a bundle of clothes.
"Thanks you, again," Kyvan says. The waitress smiles and walks back into the bar.
