What? How old do you think Ralph is? That term, among others, has been around for a while and, according to my nephews, is still in use.

True, but I've never encountered it outside of the United Kingdom... and since I'm a writer, I pay close attention to the way people speak. It surprised me, that's all - it's used very appropriately. (That smarmy little git... I'd have done considerably worse than that to him... a handful of fine-grit sand down the back of the shorts whilst I was lifting him off the ground, for starters...)

[...unWARP!!!]

Good evening.

Well, it looks like Keenspace is running smoothly again, I think.

Well, Ralph, this is yet another great comic of yours! Also, on Sunday's TOQ, I didn't see anything wrong either.

Melvin? Who came up with that term?

Until next time, remember:

I AM THE J.A.M.

Good evening.

Good evening.

Oh yeah, I was going to say that for a moment there it looked like either Nip or Tuck decided to shed his clothes and run on all fours there, except that at the moment, neither is missing their right fang, lol.

Until next time, remember:

I AM THE J.A.M.

Good evening.

the most prominent reference i can think of for the public use of 'melvined' was in "bill and ted's bogus journey' (yes, i saw it. keanu reeves is a brilliant and talented actor, as long as he just has to stand there looking confused and a little stoned...), in which the aforementioned heroes performed said activity to a rather annoyed Death, and discussed it briefly afterwards...

Ah. This explains why the phrase is in more widespread circulation than I realized... I've never watched that particular movie. I've never had it available when I was in the mood for that mode of entertainment - admittedly, I'm not often in that mode.

it's all right...you don't actually have to watch that movie to get the experience. keanu reeves reprises the role in many other fine films, such as johnny mnemonic, much ado about nothing (which is so appropriate a reflection of his acting career...), and the matrix.

not that i have anything against the good mr. reeves...if you need someone to stand around and look confused, bored, and not very bright, he's the hands-down choice...for a few years i had hope for his talent, because i thought i remembered a young keanu reeves in 'stand by me', but that was actually wil wheaton before he got whiny...anyway, i digress...

Ah - 'Johnny Mnemonic' I've seen... though I much prefered the William Gibson short story. In fact, the entirity of 'Burning Chrome' was pretty good... I must repurchase that one; it got hopelessly damaged in my last move. *sniff*

And I do see what you mean about Mr. Reeves's acting style. Very consistant between that one and 'The Matrix'.

Here's an idea: Reeves, Shatner, and Segall, all together in a Brooks film. Wouldn't you just love to see what Mel would do with (to?) them?

"if you need someone to stand around and look confused, bored, and not very bright"

My first thought was Kevin Costner. S'truth!

see, costner's my choice if you need someone to stand around looking pompous, pseudo-intellectual, and self-righteous (he's an *artist*, not a mere actor, or didn't you know?)...

Costner: Best when playing baseball. Otherwise he should avoid the big screen. (At least he didn't attempt an English accent for Robin Hood. I shudder to think....)

Reeves: I think he actually plays an excellent, wide range of stoned characters. I think it served him right to be in an itsy-bitsy artsy-fartsy film like The Matrix when he could have starred in the blockbuster Speed II.

Melvin: OK, please explain it to me. I'm a damn Yank. I needed the jokes from Adams and Pratchit with the guy climbing up the wall with the box of chocolates explained to me too. (I get them now.)

I can't say I've heard of being 'Melvined' but it sounds a lot like being given a 'Wedgie' and thats a very good reason for not wearing pants.
