Behind the Scenes: Steve

Well, the cast is still lively, so I'll talk about them. Not revealing any spoilers, just some background that may or may not be important to the comic but is somewhat amusing/interesting.

Name: Steven Trevor Jones
Birthplace: Paris, Maine
Permanent Residence: Ishpeming, Michigan

At the age of 17, Steve was waiting for his brother, Jake, to pick him up at the Country Kitchen restaurant. Mark, one of the friends Steve was there with, offered him a cigarette and they went out back to smoke. That's where Steve's life crashed a bit. He saw Jake fighting with a pale stranger who was chewing on Jake's neck. Knowing that he was seen, the vampire ran. For a high school junior, seeing a relative's dead body with the throat mangled is somewhat traumatic, as you might expect. But the lack of blood and two especially deep holes told Steve just what had done this to his brother.

Steve's mother went crazy busying herself doing anything to avoid thinking. His father spiraled down into deeper and deeper depression. His sister Michelle, too young to really understand, just grew more confused. Steve himself just tried to forget in an alcoholic haze. His decision to go to the same college that Jake had been hoping to attend upon graduating the local community college may have been out of respect or morbid inpulse; he won't say which.

The Sigma Alpha Tau fraternity had lost several members through graduation the previous semester, so they were recruiting hard. Steve had been distant and wanted to change things in college, so he pledged without thinking over it. By the end of the semester, however, he realized that his personality didn't fit in with them at all. During the first few weeks, he had met a cute girl named Katie Windchen, so he decided to check out her social group, the UC Rats. There he met Eli Schattensfeuer, who was cynical and apathetic enough to match him, and Mike Frost, who was somehow a bigger dork than he was.

At the end of the first year, he had to choose living arrangements for the next year. The frat house was one option that he was quick to dismiss. Eli already had a one-bedroom apartment, and Steve thought that two nutcases living together might not be good for the continued existance of the state. And, sadly, he had made no progress dating Katie, so he couldn't move in with her when she got an off-campus apartment that summer. So he signed up for a room with Mike, and went back home to deal with his screwy family for the summer.
