Most of us who were around when Berke Brethed's Bloom County was in the papers remember it fondly. The mix of characters seemed to play well and gave readers a variety of perspectives.
Recently, Brehted's most popular character, Opus, returned as the title character of a Sunday-only strip. It seems to me, at least, that the new strip is dark, brooding, and a little depressing. I'm not saying that a strip has to be upbeat or cheerful all the time, especially the way the world is today, but the constant dark cloud over Opus and his fearful outlook rob the character of his charm and cuddliness. A cute, trusting, naive penguin in the world can be poigniant and entertaining. A depressed, brooding, potentially suicidal one is one I can do without.
