Personally, I'm surprised I'm still going with this thing. Usually, I would have given up on a project like this a long time ago.I was going to post some contest information in celebration of the big Five-0, but I'm still working out some details.Questions, comments? Favorite strips, favorite characters?------------------

Yes, MacCreagle's first appearance is definitely in my top five. For one, I love the way I drew him in those panels (a look I haven't been able to quite duplicate in his subsequent appearances), I like the repetition of the word "fookin'", and I'm very happy with what I consider to be a rather subtle punchline.In fact, the "Secret Society Week" is probably my favorite run of strips so far.Strangely enough, with the exception of a cool-looking fourth panel, I was sort of dissapointed with your other favorite choice when I originally drew it.Thanks for the response, Jim. Until I start getting posts from some other folks around here, get used to some long-winded and overly specific replies.------------------

Actually, I'd have to say I prefer this MacCreagle (sp) moment:

It's also a good intro strip for a newcomer, as it pretty much capsulized the events of the strip to date.Favorite character is Briefcase. Definitely. He reminds me of Michael Douglas' character in Falling Down.When it comes to my favorite strip in general... this one:

My first version of this strip was called "Conspiracy House", and it was a Bloom County rip-off. All these characters lived in the same house in the suburbs, and they were pretty much all Bloom replacements. Briefcase was originally designed as my Steve Dallas.Funny that you're picking up a "Falling Down" vibe, though, Sloane. Personally, I'd think that if anybody would be giving off that suppressed rage thing, it would be Mannlicher (the bald guy with his sleeves rolled up).That Kla'athor strip you mentioned is a favorite of my brother's as well, but what he likes is the guy complaining about his missing egg roll in the first panel.------------------

Boy, the innocent optimism of this thread's title sure seems misplaced a couple weeks later. I honestly don't know when I'll be updating again.Somebody a few weeks ago jokingly warned me against pursuing storylines in my strip because they would "devour my soul". Man, was that guy right. I find myself not only in the position of having no time or energy to update, but also not particularly caring what happens with Hoax's head, Kitano's ninja, etc. This was supposed to be a goofy little gag comic, what the hell happened?I might relaunch after FUCKING Christmas is over and pretend like none of these convoluted stories ever started (notice how I've already given up on the "investigating the tentacle attack on Briefcase" story?).My brother said in an e-mail that no comic-strip joke should last longer than five days. Man, was he also right.See you around, guys...------------------

Well, you know, I've talked to others about the whole plot arc thing. I'm of the opinion, and I'm not alone, that all gag strips end up getting sucked into plot arcs one way or another. This is usually because one can not develop a character without having something carry over from gag strip to gag strip. Then this character consistency becomes a reliable reaction to plot elements, then it becomes a storyline.Good thing about gag strips is that you can do something more extreme to cut off the story line if you have to... like having Briefcase wake up with Bobby Ewing in his shower or something.Might I recommend "or something"?------------------

My brother seriously suggested the Bobby Ewing solution when he first read my "Hoax gets his head chopped off" cliffhanger.It's funny that you brought it up, JPSloane, since I fairly well ridiculed the "Bobby scenario" the first time.Yeah, I'm definitely going to go for "or something", but I've sort of lost my way. Like I said, I've got to wait until this damn holiday is over.------------------

Gotta say, my fav strip is this one, not because of the top part, but I love that last box about the ninja. Infact, before that strip I was considering giving up on the comic, as Briefcase simply pissed me off. Hoax was good, but not until he reached the lab, which was later.

It's actually two strips (you've noticed that it's the only 8-panel strip in the run? That's why). Furthermore, they're displayed out of sequence. The bottom four panels are actually the first strip in sequence.This happened because I screwed up on the file names when I was uploading (I was still new at this whole FTP thing at that point), and I'm too lazy to go back and fix the whole thing. Funny thing is, NOBODY has noticed, and I mean NOBODY.That last panel, where Kitano enthuses about the throwing stars that go "Fwing! Fwing! Ching!" is probably my favorite panel ever. (inside joke alert: much later, when Kitano's ninja goes on his killing spree, you will notice that his throwing stars in the second panel do indeed go "Fwing! Fwing! Ching!")As to your character observations:
Briefcase is supposed to piss you off, man! He's lazy, rude, and completely self-involved! However, I agree that Hoax did not find himself as a character until he started working in the lab.Thanks for the feedback, and:NEW STRIPS NEXT MONDAY!------------------

I usually like lazy, rude, and completely self-involved characters, such as Homer and Fry from the Simpsons and Futureama respectivly. They remind me more of myself <IMG SRC="http://www.keenspace.com/forums/wink.gif">

It's a lot easier to forgive rudeness, laziness and selfishness when they're bundled with stupidity. Briefcase, who by all evidence is at least somewhat intelligent, doesn't have any excuse.I still like him, though...------------------
