I hear so many writers and broadcasters call for an eight-team playoff. And I hear others say eight teams are too few and 16 are too many.

I think 12 teams can work, and here's how.

You have 11 conferences in division I-A (I refuse to call it by its new moniker, the Bowl Subdivision). Take the champions from the 11 conferences and the independent (Notre Dame, Army, Navy or Temple) with the best record.

Seed them according to record.

Seeds 1-4 get a first-round bye. Seeds 5-12 play in week one, with No. 5 playing No. 12, No. 6 playing No. 11, etc.

In week two, No. 1 plays the No. 5-No. 12 winner, No. 2 plays the No. 6-No. 11 winner, etc.

Keep going until you have a champion.

It's only five weeks. It would go from mid-December to mid-January. What's so bloody hard about that?
