TSFMB is down, so I can't post this there. ARGH! Of all the luck...
Okay, okay. Before people get curious, this is about the Lord of the Rings movie. Yes, yes, you've heard all the rave--if you know me well enough, you know that I'm a lethal skeptic. Usually when I'm skeptical about something, I stay skeptical even after giving it a try on my own.
I was VERY skeptical about the LotR movie. I've never read a book by Tolkein, and the last thing I ever saw related to him with my own eyes were the cartoon adaptions for The Hobbit and The Secret of Nymh (which I'm admitantly not sure is a Tolkein book to begin with)! Not to mention Elija Wood's pretty face plastered in all the advertisements, and I HATE pretty boys more than anything (such as Leonardo DiCaprio).
Talandar dragged me to see the six o'clock showing today.
I was, quite simply, blown away. You never see movies of this quality anymore, and it was just so...incredible, all of it! If you've read LotR, then you know the plot stands on it's own as simply wonderful, but then you have the stuff only the movie can provide: make-up, computer effects, acting! My doubts about Mr. Pretty Elija were quickly drowned out as I saw what talent he really had. The make-up is stunning, from the elf ears to the goblin's rotting, slime-covered skin, even to the halflings' too-large, excessively hairy feet!
As such, the mighty scepter of Skepticism has failed me, and with it I accept defeat. It doesn't matter if you haven't read the books--if you have even a slight amount of fantasy knowlege and love for the same fantasy in you (this will appeal greatly to Dungeons and Dragons fans, I think), then you will be turned onto this movie. I kept seeing Legend of Zelda characters, too! One second-carder looks a LOT like Link...only without the green clothes and the skirt. But I digress! GO SEE LORD OF THE RINGS.
------------------

*stunned silence* Unh...I am beaten...
Amazing.
I saw it release day and it was simply AMAZING.
I have not read the Lord Of The Rings trilogy since early middle school and next to C.S. Lewis' Chronicles of Narnia and L. Frank Baum's Wizard of Oz series it is bar none MY FAVORITE fantasy based series of books from my childhood. As the movie progrezssed a LOT OF LINES and exact scenes came back to me as well. Specifically the ending with Boromir (I think thats his name cant remember), Strider, Frodo and Sam.
Any doubt I had about Elijah Wood in the role (AND BELIEVE ME I HAD DOUBTS >_______<) was completely extinguished.
I had wondered if Arwen had a role like that. I could not remember or not, BUT considering how the did it, since the movie was so long (3 hours) I can SORT of see why they did.
The Balrog was quite simply - from a CGI Animation aspect AMAZING.
If there was one thing from LoTR's that I remember VIVIDLY - it was that scene with the Balrog and Gandalf....that scene had people in the theatre crying and almost brought me to tears as well. Its one of my favorite moments in any book and it was pulled off flawlessly.
If I remember correctly i always thought Gollum had a bigger role with Frodo - BUT was that in the Two Towers or in the last book? I cant remember. Speaking of which can anyone tell me the title of the third book as I've forgotten.
I KNEW that something was left out - Glorfindel and Tom Bombadil but I couldnt remember who. To be honest though, it never dawned on me at all until Sam mentioned it.
All in all I went in withe expectations down and ended up having them raised MUCH further than I had planned. I have high hopes for the sequel.
Being a bit of a fantasy nut like me, I dont think you'll be dissapointed Sam.
By the way Sama - the animated version of Secret of Nimh was produced by Don Bluth. THE FIRST ONE - NOT THE SECOND. Avoid the second like the plague - IT IS NOT PART OF BOOK CONTINUITY AND IS KIDDIE PAP by Universal to cash in on Bluths liscenses ala Land Before Time.
Arguably Secret Of Nimh, American Tail 1 and 2, and Land Before Time 1 are the best works Bluth ever did. Heaven knows his stuff now is awful and his series have been bastardized to death in the hands of Universal Studios. Then again I'm not surprised considering what they've done to poor Woody Woodpecker >_<
As far as the Nimh book series goes - READ THEM if you ever get the chance. Very very good books.
------------------
