Beware the Grendelwock my son...

Postby The Joester on Mon Sep 03, 2001 12:11 am

amen to that
I dun think we're gonna read grendel, because next we're moving on to some book about a green giant.
my teacher is cool in that he constantly tells us "I know that British Lit. is the most redarded class ever, but i still have to make you do it."
the public vs. grendel? man, that musta been dumb.

Yes, this thread is making me look forward to starting Beowulf tomorrow. I think my teacher said we'd be reading twenty-some stores and books this year. Mnpf, fun.

Yeah. Reading in an English class. Who's ever heard of such an outlandish thing? This must be the work of sadists in the field of education!

Oh man, I had to read that book in high school too. IT'S SO MCFUCKING BORING.
The only good thing is that after that, you get to read "Grendel" by John Gardener, which is an AMAZING book. The only drawback to that bookm is that to really understand it, you have to read Beowulf. And that is hell.
Hopefully your teacher will be cool like mine and let you guys read "Grendel" next.
And hopefully your teacher wont be evil like mine and make the final project for reading both book is having the class enact a court trial of The public vs Grendel. I was Grendel's attorney. I tell ya, it is TOUGH defending a monster who eats people, even when you do have an excellent defense. We did get him off of vandalism charges, though.
------------------

the trial wasn't really that bad....read Grendel, and you'll understand why.
And do read it when you're done with Beowulf, even if your teacher doesn't require it. It really is a kickass book.
------------------

Well, i think it's pretty safe to say that we're not reading Grendel, seeming to as how we'vr already moved onto the Canterbury Tales.
I'm amazed at how fast we're moving in this class.
Anyhoo, for this book what we're doing is making our own Canterbury Tales character. and since Chaucer was one of the first to (brilliantly) exploit stereotypes for humor, we're supposed to stereotype a proffesion or a region or something. Everyone in the class makes one, and then he'll put them together on a big list and outline, and give that back to us, and we'll all pick ten characters and use them.
So i made Indie Rock Steve.
I thought i'd post his character scetch here, just because i like it.
I

I knew about it, but I don't want to say I did, because I'm so cool that I can't even say I have knowledge of modern society, or any of the "undergroundish" societies that are accepted as norms in thise day and age.
Heck, I'm too cool to accept the fact that there is such a thing as society, or even other people. You're all just extensions of me.
