Was it really Avariss' plan? The mope might have decided, on his own, that if he was going to die soon he'd do it on his own terms.
Usually martyrdom is undertaken by those willing to die so that others can live in a better world. Seeking to fan the flames of hatred isn't a good cause to die for. It makes sense to die to end a war, but not to die for the start of one. But, it's been established that the mope wasn't right in the head.
With all the people who saw Martin NOT shoot the kid, the people who also saw him dig his fingers into his scalp before collapsing, and the medical evidence of his death being self-induced, you'd think this would wrap itself up easily. However, if tensions in society are as tight as they seem, the media may leap onto the story as an excuse for anti-fur inflammatory statements, ignoring the facts. Similar things have happened in real life.

In all my years in the superhero service industry, I thought that I had seen just about every form of evil that there is, from professional building demolishers to viruses programmed to attack only certain species.
But this....
This is a new low.
Aviriss has to pay, and pay hard. Time to get out the 'little black book' I think...

If I don't depict exactly how deviod of anything
resembling scruples Avariss is, you won't
have a complete picture of the man and how he
achieved the position he holds in their world.
The natural tendencies of a reasonably well-adjusted individual would be to shun
completely anything that even resembled this
twisted form of martyrdom. But Avariss doesn't
have those tendencies, and not only that - he
lives in a society that allows him to take
advantage of others of like mind. So.. he
doesn't mind using a terminally ill youngster
for his own ends, and the terminally ill
youngster is more than willing to act in the
service of such a 'great man' as Avariss.

He could've, but if he'd wanted to do that,
he could just as easily have carried a REAL
weapon to the Festival.
quote:

Therefore, going by the twisted ideals in the
minds of the three troublemakers, fanning
the flames of hate and ruining a festival that
fosters beliefs that are the antithesis of
theirs constitutes an attempt to create a
better world. "Better" in their terms.

What has happened won't have as much impact as
what they'd hoped would have happened, true.

It has certainly shown Steven just exactly
how warped his father is. To simply be
willing to jeopardize the life of a furry
wouldn't surprise him at all. But to actually
set up a situation where a human life
would be lost - particularly a kid's life -
to further his own ends, well... that's a new
low. Steven's more than familiar with his
father's powergames, but he would not have
expected THIS.
