there is no way this can just be a coincidence is there? it seems every time tavtitania calls gene he wants to talk to a computer. (convenient ah?) i am thinking these self aware machine may be ready to serve some sort of part of something sometime soon. the furs dont live in the middle ages, and technology seems advances as ours about. could we be seeing computer viruses or something? i dont know.. *sigh* poors genes about to get chewed out by a computer. hey, are there any furry computer maufacturers or are the majior companys owned by humans?
(i would think furrys, after all, a computer making bird, 'bill' gates. heh, ah bad joke forget it)

I don't think it's all that convenient. On the occasions Tavie might want to talk to Gene, there's a good 90% chance he's fixing something. Electronics techies/geeks are like that.

still, i wonder what role machines will play in the climaxtic battle or whatever, or will they be part of an entirely different story arch alltogether? sentient tinker toys arent highlighted for no reason ^.^;

They will definitely play a role; indeed,
their role is being defined now.

Of course, I'm not limited to perceiving just machines as being gleefully out to inconvenience me, but other objects as well, such as chairs, shopping carts, the bannister on the stairway, etc. All part of the obstinacy of the inanimate.

Also, it looks as if Caged Electronic Data is going to have to start using Asimov's four Laws of Robotics.

Unforetunately, it's not that simple. The devices aren't exhibiting a form of AI that can be re-programmed. Instead, they show a form of consciousness that only appears when SotS is active, which may not respond to programming as we know it.

Perhaps when AI programming allows machines to have what we call conciousness, the Soul will merge with that and then can be controlled with morality algorithms. Of course, knowing that the mechanical soul pre-exists mechancial consciousness could open a whole new realm of ethics.

Boy, would it ever. That might preclude the
whole business of attempting to develop AI
to the point of what we would call conciousness
(at least in Furriston's world) if it might
subvert an already existing soul. Of course,
I have to say "might preclude" in their case
because it *is* Furriston's world, and it
took a shamefully long time for humanity to
recognize that furries had souls.

*chuckle* It's less paranoia in Gene's case
and more curiosity. None of the devices that
have so far been discovered to have their own
awareness of being can be said to be evil,
or even mischevious. The hand-held scanning
device only rebelled because it could no
longer bear to see the beings it scanned for
in misery - hardly a malevolent thing to do.
And the sorter seemed quite placid and content
to fulfill the purpose for which it was built.
Now if any of these devices start rasping out
megalomanic death threats, then we got
worries!
