Since we do have a number of musicians and music-lovers here, this seemed like cool topic to start.

Who here has a favorite album rarity? CD or vinyl is okay.

I have a couple. I found a vinyl copy of Sally Oldfield's "Water Bearer" in near-perfect shape at a Goodwill for 50 cents. I checked some places online when I got it, and there are people apparently paying a good $40-50 or so for a copy of this.

My latest is a remastered CD of Seventh Wave's only two albums, "Things to Come", and "Psi-Fi". It took me about four tries with different vendors to get it. Finally, Amazon.co.uk was able to export me a copy from England.

It'll be interesting to hear what some others have run across.

Well, my "rare" albums are mostly anime soundtracks so... I guess my favorite would have to be my copy of the Street Fighter II Movie Anime Soundtrack.

I'm trying to get all the Monkees albums. Thank God, Rhino rereleased them about 6 years ago.

I have:
The Monkees (1966)

More of the Monkees (1966)

Headquarters (1967)(the first album they actually played on and considered by some to be their best album)

Pisces, Aquarius, Capricorn, and Jones Ltd. (1967) (Those who disagree about Headquarters being their best, usually say this one is their best. The most psychedelic of the Monkees albums)

The Birds, the Bees, and the Monkees (1968) (Unfortunately, this is a Monkees album in-name-only. Aside from Daydream Believer (made at an earlier time), the only song here with more than one Monkee playing on it is Auntie's Municipal Court.)

Head (1968) (from their feature film, which despite good reviews, was a box office flop. It is now considered a cult classic. Sadly, this album was also the beginning of the end for the Monkees. Peter Tork left the group after this album.)

Ones I don't have:

Instant Replay (1969) (Now reduced to a trio, this album was modestly successful. But Monkeemania was already waning. I won this recently on an eBay auction)

The Monkees Present (1969) (Another in-name-only album. Mike, Mickey, and Davy basically are just doing solo songs on this. Mike Nesmith left after this album, leaving only two Monkees: Davy Jones and Mickey Dolenz)

Changes (1970) (Now reduced to a duo, this Monkees album is considered the weakest of all of them. Mickey admitted he and Davy only did this album cause they owed their record company an album. Some see this as a decent "swan song". Oddly enough, the Monkees officially called it quits the same year as the Beatles)

Pool It! (1987) (A resurge in Monkee popularity, thanks to MTV, led Davy, Mickey, and Peter to record a new album. Mike wasn't interested in becoming a Monkee again but did join group for a concert in 1989)

Justus (1996) (Davy, Mickey, Peter, AND Mike went into the studios and recorded a new album. This was the first album with all 4 Monkees in 28 years. The album title pretty much tells those involved with the album. The Monkees wrote all the songs, played all the instruments, and produced the album by themselves. Although Entertainment Weekly called it the "Least Essential Reunion album", Monkee fans were glad to see all 4 Monkees together again. I won this album recently on eBay)

I don't really buy albums anymore, I burn them mostly. But I can say that the one I absolutely adore that I was never able to find anywhere for import or anything is the full soundtrack to Angel Sanctuary. I could find singles and the soundtrack for the first OVA, but that was it. So I downloaded ALL the music from the series and burned a soundtrack of my own.

I would actually love to get my hands on some of the Monkees albums. I love psychadelic music, for whatever odd reason. But I still remain rooted to prog rock, which in all honesty, was born from psychedelia, so they go together well.

Ah, this is where I come in! I love prog, psychadelic, and alternative rock from the 60s, 70s, & 80s. My favorites are the Moody Blues and Pink Floyd. Jethro Tull, but I'm not sure where that one fits in, perhaps folk rock also? And of course, the Beatles. I grew up on it, from my parents. To rebel as a teenager I had to listen to country & pop *lol*

Vinyls? Well Ive collected a few of the above. Rare? The "white vinyls" White Album, I've been told its rare. This dates me, but its kinda funny story why I have it: when I was 5, I scratched up my mom's copy in my kiddie record player. She made me "buy" it with my allowance or something! I have no idea what its worth now, I'm not selling it! *lol*

All Aretha Franklin's Atlantic LPs. I have
most all of them from "I Never Loved A Man
The Way That I Love You" all the way up to
"Satisfaction". Still a couple I would like
to get ahold of in better condition than the
LPs I have now - some of my old albums are
not in the best of shape. I should have taken
better care of them but I was young and foolish.
::Sighs:: At that age you just want to hear
the music, you aren't thinking about how to
care for the records. <:) It's interesting
that Bill mentioned Rhino Records because
they have rereleased on CD some of my
favorite (and hard to find) albums by Aretha.
I would still like to find more affordable
vinyl though. Something about LPs, they have
a special charm.

Ironically, one of my most prized albums is the one I'm listening to right now. It's not particularly rare in the real sense of the word, but it's hard to find here, being an import from Japan.

I'm listening to the symphonic album of "Laputa: Castle in the Sky." I bought it off of eBay... now, the real tricky thing is getting the actual cd, not a Chinese bootleg (SonMay, EverAnime, feh).. I lucked out and got the real thing. Wai.

(And the music is absolutely fantastic, by the way.)

(Now I need to hunt down some Shonen Knife and maybe a little Zappa...)

I understand there's still a couple copies of the "Animalympics" soundtrack out there. You'll need alot of luck finding one at a used record shop, though.

And even if I DID find it, I haven't got a turn table, so I don't know what good it'd be.

Jon Anderson's solo album "Animation" is a HUGE favorite of mine. Unfortunately it's not available on CD for some twisted and ungodly reason (his first two solo albums are). So I have it on tape, and as soon as I find someone who's willing to transfer tape to CD-R I'm going to finally "have" it on CD.

The Nice's "Nice" album was a rare one on CD for some time, until it was re-released two years ago.

Oh my God, somebody else likes the "Animation" album! My mom actually has that on vinyl.

Once upon a time, I was speaking (via email) to a fellow who was trying to get the rights to the masters so he could get it remastered onto CD. I lost his email addy a long time ago, though, so I don't know how I might get back in touch with him.

I don't know if he ever got anywhere or not. Sorry to say this, but probably not.

My mom and sisters bought a standalone CD recorder. I need to ask for them to record Animation for me...

I saw an anime film with a title like that a few years ago, about a floating castle built around a huge tree. I loved it - the countryside in the ground-level scenes was pretty much like that around my town. A brilliant story, too.

That is indeed the same film. Laputa is basically available only as an old subtitle film here in the states, as Disney has choked up pretty much all of Miyazaki's films for the past 15 years or so.

Me, bitter? Naw...

Idunno if it's hard to find, but "Who's Next" is the greatest album of all time!can't wait to get it

I do have the soundtrack to Tenkuu no Shirou Raputa though, one of my faves. The case is cracked, but I don't care! ^________^

I want the original Highlander soundtrack album. In fact, I want two copies. Now if that isn't a hard-to-find, I don't know what is...

I'd also like the CD of "Cleo at Carnegie: the 10th Anniversary," but I haven't really started hunting for that yet.

Why not just get Queen's "A Kind of Magic"? It has most of the songs...

One of my favorite rarities is the 45rpm vinyl of Bill Cosby doing "Football" and "Golf" I remembered that from early in my hatch days, and finally found a copy in New York, thanks to the good ole internet!
Another which I like a lot is the soundtrack to Animalympics, which I don't think is on CD either, but is really superb, with the music by Graham Gouldman of TenCC / The Hollies.

Some I am looking for...
In the 70's a band called Pilot released one song called "Magic" and I've been unable to determine if they had an album, which I'd like to hear.
Also, in the category of boggle-the-mind-why-it-hasn't-been-released is a CBS records LP called Christmas Carols of Europe, which I am sure sould sell well, but I only have it on vinyl and I have been hoping it'll come out someday on tape or CD.

Another thing I am thankful for, is having LP versions of pre-CD Beatle's songs, in STEREO. (Dear George Martin, if we want mono, we can just turn off the stereo switch, so why take away that option from us on early Beatle CDs?) *grrr* :>

There is nothing like the stereo versions of "I Feel Fine", "I Should Have Known Better", and "All My Loving" *tailfeatherwags!*
