I look foreward very much to seeing just what blessing Bev has received. But in the spirit of Elix, I've decided to quote part of a song that seems appropriate for this encounter.
I'm waiting for ignition, I'm looking for a spark
Any chance collision and I light up in the dark
There you stand before me, all that fur and all that hair
Oh, do I dare ... I have the touch
Wanting contact
I'm wanting contact
I'm wanting contact with you
Shake those hands, shake those hands
Give me the thing I understand
Shake those hands, shake those hands
Shake those hands, shake those hands
-- Peter Gabriel, "I Have the Touch."
-- ArchTeryx

Hmmmm....
Something else has become clearer: I think I understand why the Shadow People are so shy and secretive. If you had that sort of power, a Healing Touch, and people knew about it, would you know a moment's peace, from that point on? Could you turn anyone down in their need, however briefly, even if only to keep body and soul together?
I might want to hide, too.
I would think that Cotton would have detected them already through the Sight of the Soul. Unless the Shadow People have learned how to restrain their power(s), in order to avoid such detection.
------------------
Just point me towards the nearest Starbucks. Preferably one that hasn't been trashed by anarchists.

One other possibility.. not directly meant to
foreshadow anything upcoming in the story,
only pointing out another reason: since it's
quite clear that there are those in their
world that have no compunctions about employing
some very brutal means to exploit those who
are, by chance or design, exploitable... is
it not also possible that the shadow people
miight be hiding to keep themselves from
being subjugated and used by the more
powerful members of their world?

When bad things happen to someone and they don't even try to react in a good way, it doesn't generate any good karma at all. The inverse is also true, if good things happen to you and you act all arrogant or in some other anti-social way, bad karma for you. If you don't react, you get no karma.
So, assuming:
Δκ is the amount of new karma.
φ is the reaction factor.
ν is the nature of the thing.
We'll get the following formula:
Δκ = |ν| · φ
But if you think of it, when something good happens to you and you act indifferently, you get some bad karma. On the inverse, if something bad happens to you but you manage to ignore it, you get some good karma. It leads to the following conclusion:
φ = ρ + γ
Where γ is the "expected average reaction" to the thing and ρ is how you actually reacted.
It's well known that the expected average reaction is directly proportional to the thing nature (ν). But it's not really equal. It can be stronger, or weaker, depending on your "reaction average" too, just as well as the "reaction average" of the people you know (the commonplace factor), so we're going to relate these two. After considering some good/bad reaction/thing values (which I won't go into detail), I will postulate this relation will be most likely a sum. It means:
γ = ν + μ·ω
Where μ is the actual mean of all your considerable reactions during your recent life, and ω is the mean if this mean for the people you know. Now let's join that all in a big creepy formula!
Δκ = |ν| · (ρ + ν + μω)
Note that μ talks about your considerable reactions of your recent life and ω talks the same thing for people you know. These adjectives are really flexible and will be chosen by the one who get's to judge your karma. Nobody else. Not just that, the actual nature of the thing as good or bad will be chosen by the one who will apply the formula.
Here's a simple example. I think this post has a very trivial content, and I had some fun writing it. So I think it will give me a tiny and positive ν, which results in a tiny Δκ (but I wouldn't know its sign). On the other paw, I know many people hate Math to death and will hate to see all these cursed Greek letters along with math signs. To them my ν will be huge and negative. All I can do about that is apologise (I'm sorry!! I just wanted to give my part in favor to Karma theories!! I didn't mean to offend!!) so that hopefully my ρ gets a little less negative thus going to φ and then Δκ. PLEASE FORGIVE ME!!!
------------------
