Simple: a carry over from obsolete technology.

The first typewriters keys were layed out in a sequential pattern the alphabet. Though this was logical, people who used the typewriters for any length of time soon were typing so fast that the type heads were colliding at the impact point which jammed the typewriter. This was such a persistent problem that the typewriter manufacturers redistributed the keys in a different order specifically to slow down the speed at which people typed. This alleviated the problem for a short time until people became familiar with the new layout and ran into the same problem again. By this time, however, the manufacturers had invented an improved design to handle faster typing. Though they could have changed the letter layout back to what they had before the companies decided to leave the keys in the QWERTY format. Computers, which were being promoted to offices as replacements for typewriters, used the same format to ease the computers implementation into the workforce without increasing the required time to train. By sheer inertia has the keyboard not changed.

If I were to suddenly make a keyboard which had the standard map of keys laid out so that the eight most used letters were directly under your finger tips in the resting position while the eight least used keys were consigned to the periphery of the keyboard and the numeric keypad matched the pushbuttons on the telephone would you rush out to buy one? The answer is most likely to be "no" as you already know your...was that ATWERPY?...board and are familiar with how to type on that.

*Whips out his handy hose and douses Darthen Wulf's tail then spritzes Red Hawk for good measure without waking the two sleepers.*

No, no, no. That will not do. For shame, the smell of burnt fur is absolutely noxious.

*Suddenly reaches into his pocket, whips out a five gallon bucket and purs out the contents behind the two sleeping furs*

GUBWEEEE

*snap,snap,snap,snap,snap,snap,snap,snap,snap!*

*quietly puts the pail marked "Alaskan Crustaceans" into a dark, dark corner*

Speaking of dark corners, I realized that someone had asked me a question a long, long time ago. A Twinkie Farm is a clever euphemism for nut house or insane asylum or mental hospital, which I gyess are all euphemisms for psychiatric medical facilities. Twinkies are a Hostess snack product.
