Who the hell is Lucio Fontana?

Post by KathleenJ »

Well you might ask.
*ahem*
Useless knowledge time!
Italian abstract artist in the 1940s and 50s. Considered an early pioneer of the theories of Spatialism and Conceptualism, if that means anything to you. He stuck in my mind from one of my past art history classes, for his sheer...I can't even think of a word for it.
One of his famous artworks is called Spatial Concept: The End of God. It's a big, round green canvas that's full of holes and tears like it's been stabbed to death. Cause that's just the kinda guy he was.
Hooray for art.
Unfortunately, I can't find a picture online.

Okay, I get it. The villainous teacher.

When you teach, you have to keep a certain distance to your subject. Or you'll be picked apart like *that*.

Eh, I really don't hate art, I swear.
The dude's not really a villain - he just seems that way to Dyl. There's more to this story.

Here's one from the same showing, Spacial concept: Expectation, or something. Say what you will, but the man really knows his white space.

That he do!
Honestly, I'm not trying to judge whether this kind of art is good or bad. It has its place. Mr. Fontana just seems to me like the ultimate in the kind of art that makes the general population go "I don't get it".

No, no, the modern Dadaist "installations" do that to me. Things on canvas make sense.

Heh, that's a whole 'nother strata of what people don't get.
One of these days, I'll pull a Marcel Duchamp and put a random image-searched picture of a urinal with my signature on it up as a comic.

I'll say. A particularly aesthetic.. slit.

And.. sometimes I'm not in the mood to be taken literally. Language is a fun thing to play with, not? Like mold in the hands of a five-year-old. Sure helps a limited vocabulary.

Going for that Asian-influenced art, I see. I call it "benjo."

Those kind of urinals make me nervous, because it's possible to step in them when you're half-asleep. Ew.

Urinal?

Post by Al_fayyed »

Actually, I think that's an entire toilet assembly in Japan. You squat.

At least, if it's a urinal, there are a lot of places in Japan without anything but.

I was about to ask exactly that...I was pretty sure it was a toilet, because there was an illustration of one in our Japanese textbook, and I wasn't quite sure how it worked.

Railings

I really wish there were railings in the stalls. That's all I have to say.

Do they have a "handicapped" version?

Probably not. This picture was taken in the Tokyo Tower washroom, and the other stalls were regular toilets.

But Tokyo tower is a tourist area, maybe they were catering to the "western tourists"

this should answer some questions

I like how in the "Caution! If you lost balance, you gonna fall down on shit" frame, the guy has a huge smile on his face as he falls!

What I don't understand..
You have double distance to pee, if you're standing. And double the mess.
It's difficult to kneel.
Squat down to pee? Why the..

Personally the "double distance" sounds like a challenge to me (unfortunately when i firs saw it i was confused and afraid of it.... then i did research).

But i could see why this type of "waste disposal" would be used. I hate public washrooms and try to touch as little as possible. Y'never know who has been using it before you.
