So anyone heard a good album lately?
So anyone heard a good album lately?
"Congratulations" by MGMT. It's really been growing on me. I've been listening to it almost every day for the last three weeks when I drive to and from work. Like Radiohead, but hipper.
"Funeral" by the Arcade Fire. Almost every track on this album is amazing. I highly recommend giving it a listen.
Also on heavy rotation: "Need You Now" by Lady Antebellum, "Fearless" by Taylor Swift. Recent country music is strangely addictive.

Re: So anyone heard a good album lately?
been listening to Rotersand's Random is Resistance, its not as good as 10 23, or Welcome to Goodbye, but It's still pretty hefty of a release.
Listening to Wynardtage's The Grey line as well, its an older record but I just recently picked it up due to all he singles and remixes the bands been doing. Its really great. Has a bit of a skinny puppy meets front 242 sort of vibe.
Angel Spit's Hideous and Perfect is pretty enjoyable too. It has more of an industrial rock, backbone as do all thier releases, but this one feels more fluid as apposed to the older records when they seemed to be trying to hard to compete with aggrotech bands, which they most definitely are not.
back to regularly listening to Electro stuff, it must be all the clubbing, and seeing a girl who is into industrial doesn't hurt.

Got those, Taylor is my addiction (well her and caffeine) Lady A aren't bad.Toxic wrote:Also on heavy rotation: "Need You Now" by Lady Antebellum, "Fearless" by Taylor Swift. Recent country music is strangely addictive.
Bought We Are The Emergency's "Whispers and Fragments" today so that's getting a good listen, great Perth punk/emo band.
Paramore, the Creepshow, Keith Urban, VersaEmerge, New Found Glory, I Killed the Prom Queen, Coltrane - I could go on and on - my iPod is constantly attached when I leave the house so I listen to a lot of music.
My music collection is a bizzare mix of punk, goth, country, rock and a little bit of jazz and electro mixed in.

It's been months since its release but I still find myself blown away by "Father of Death" the second album by The Protomen. http://protomen.com if you're curious. It's not just VGmusic it's cyberpunk rock opera at its finest.

I actually saw the Creepshow play a little while back (a friend of mine was playing with them here), and I dunno I still can't get into the new singer. The first record will always be my favourite.RobboAKAscooby wrote:Got those, Taylor is my addiction (well her and caffeine) Lady A aren't bad.Toxic wrote:Also on heavy rotation: "Need You Now" by Lady Antebellum, "Fearless" by Taylor Swift. Damn, this thread should have been called "Get your freak on II"!
I can't contribute to this thread. I'm still mostly rotating "Have one on me".
Oh I know. I've listened to Gavin Friday's "Each man kills the thing he loves", it's interesting but not as good as some other outings in cabaret-inspired music. Also listened to latest Eels and confirmed by inability to get in touch with them, despite all odds.

MGMT is cool. And "Funeral" is pretty awesome, I have it's listening spree every few months. In my mind Arcade Fire are currently among top inovators in pop."Congratulations" by MGMT. Re: So anyone heard a good album lately?
Me and Arcade Fire are on the outs right now. Wasn't feeling Neon Bible much at all. Funeral's still got some dope tracks, though.
Listened to the Sleigh Bells debut today and liked it. Former hardcore guitarist hooks up with a pop singer and they make weird Brooklyn music together.
Holly Miranda is less immediate, but I think I like it more. Sounds like Cat Power fronting TV On the Radio and they're all in a somber mood. That actually makes it sound terrible, now that I read that, but it isn't.
MIA's got a couple tracks out on a record coming out either June or July. First one is Born Free, which steals some droning from Suicide over which MIA spazzes out as she's wont to do. The one that came out Tuesday is XXXO, which gives me pause. A fabulous track, really, the kind of pop song I feel like Lady Gaga has been wanting to make for the last two years, a massive hook and a killer beat with a melancholy melody, but it sounds like it could be almost anyone. I guess we'll see what happens.
I keep hearing Taylor Swift and Miley Cyrus described as country and I'm just not hearing it.

Taylor and Miley are part of that pop/country blend that gets them on both the to 40 pop and country lists at the same time.

If that's true then I feel the ever-narrowing line between country and adult contemporary has finally been erased.

Oh right on, do you like other Psychobilly bands? I've seen the Creepshow a few times, mostly on festivals. I live in Southern California, and the scene is pretty strong here so there's so many festivals. haha.RobboAKAscooby wrote:Yeah I saw them at Soundwave in Brisbane back in Feb, first time I'd heard of them but I went and bought the album next day off I had, still got to get the first album I just want to find it somewhere other than iTunes, I prefer to have the CD if possible.
As to the record, I'm not sure what the status is as far is if its an import for the first record, out in Australia-- as It was on a tiny canadaian label. but I picked mine up from Amazon, might be worth a go.

Miley no, Taylor yes. Her first album was closer to the traditional country expectations but the sensibilities and structures are still there even if she's veering more towards soft-rock (I reserve the word pop for those lip-synching, dancing girls pretending to be musos).Yeahduff wrote:I keep hearing Taylor Swift and Miley Cyrus described as country and I'm just not hearing it.
I'm keeping an ear out for more psychobilly but the music scene in Brisbane is pretty average - there's only one decent punk club to speak of and small record stores are practically non-existent now - so any recommendations are welcome.Phact0rri wrote:Oh right on, do you like other Psychobilly bands? Re: So anyone heard a good album lately?
right on, I love small clubs. I use to complain about the smaller venues when I lived in normal cities, but having been out here in LA for over a year now, I miss the smaller shows. I mean going to a place with about 60 people are really tough finds in the city. I have to head to culliver or OC to find some fun more intimate performances.RobboAKAscooby wrote:Miley no, Taylor yes. As to recommendations. There's the classics that I'd suggest, like The Reverend Horton Heat, The Ghastly Ones, The Meteors, The Necromantix, and obviously The Cramps.
Others would be Batmobile, The Horrorpops, Unknown Hinson (best known for voices of the Squidbillys cartoon ironically), The Tiger Army. Also if you like punk, then you have to check out Mike Ness( of Social Distortion)'s first solo Cheating on Solitare, which is straight up country with a harsh edge. Also Hank Williams III is pretty cool. I could name drop all day I believe. Theres so many good acts out right now, I tried to not list acts that are probably not available there like LA's Peabrains, and The Hellbillys out of Tennessee.
As to Taylor Swift, I get the feeling her hearts in the right place, its just difficult in the current industry to really sell platinum records with a traditional sound. Maybe she'll do a beyonce and go to more root music once she's firmly established. I only say this, because I did talk to her for a bit a while back, and her label big machine has signed some of my very roots country clients, and I couldn't be happier.

yeah I edited to I "talked to her" as though it was in person, (she came to the office), it was a meeting with studio heads, my CEO, the A&R director and some other guys. But she's a cool girl. I don't much like her music, but she's a good person.RobboAKAscooby wrote:You lucky bastard.Phact0rri wrote:As to Taylor Swift, I get the feeling her hearts in the right place as trying to bring back so root country. Haha "soft rock" is an infinitely more pejorative term than "pop."RobboAKAscooby wrote:Miley no, Taylor yes. Heh, yeah. Pop is a very all-inclusive term. Soft rock... that's like when you listen to Metallica, but only it's ballads.
I should be getting new David Byrne/Fatboy Slim project now.

Re: So anyone heard a good album lately?
I bought my wife "Kiss and Tell" from Selena Gomez and the Scene (a Disney star far above Miley). I think it's a pretty good album and I can hear a lot of rather odd influences in her music, depending on the song you can hear the influence of Gwen Stefani, the Bangels, and Duran Duran. It's a bit odd, but it certainly doesn't sound as manufactured as a lot of Disney Star Music.
