Happy Architecture Smashin' Day

Post by KWill »

Many things happened on this 9th day of the 11th month in Germany, some not so cool, others worse.

But those aside, today we celebrate the 20th anniversary of the Fall of the Berlin Wall!
Go out and break down a wall, mental or physical!

Today I finally became normal. I broke the wall that blinded me. SCHOOL IS POINTLESS! This year is pretty much an exact repeat of last year.

daaaaw. you're so cute breaking down that physical manifistation of the iron curtain =D

Really, though, I remember when I was little watching it on TV. mostly because my dad told me to remember it. I was still awfully young, so in my mind Germany has always been one country.

I'm glad it happened, but one of my life's regrets is never getting to visit (and vandalize) the wall.

Should've joined the Army like my Dad suggested. I'd have probably been in Germany when it all went down.

The cute one is my lil' brother =(
The only picture we have of our wall-bashing session that features my face is a profile thereof with the rest of my body blocked by someone else. =/

Course, I remember Germany differently, with leaving town being like going to a whole 'nother country =P

Whenever I run into former servicemen stationed in Germany during that time, they tell me that they all had plans to see the wall someday, but didn't feel any urgency to go because it would be around forever. When it came down, they usually drew straws to see who got sent to Berlin for the unit and bring back pieces for everyone else who was still on duty.

I went to the Brandenburg Gate to celebrate! It was cold, rainy and I feared for the safety of my eyes b/c of the vast number of umbrellas, but I felt it was necessary to show support for the fall of the Berlin Wall and indirectly the fall of other walls in the future (Korea). Would love to have a piece of the Wall, but somehow I just don't think the vendors on the street are selling the real thing. :-?

Actually they have slabs of the Wall in a warehouse and a lot of the bits they sell are chunks from that, with one side sanded flat and painted with fake graffiti.

True fact.

I've seen the wall a few times, having been to Berlin a few times, and I still think the most hilarious/tragic thing about it is that East Berlin had a terrible sewage system that was driving West Berlin crazy, so West just GAVE them a shitload of sewage pipes as a gift. Just like, "dudes, seriously, just replace your goddamn sewage system." And what did the East do? Cut up the pipes and stuck them on top of the wall. It's funny, and yet, really depressing.

Hope you guys had a fun party, I know they don't generally celebrate the fall of the wall because of certain other things that also happened on the 9th of November in German history. I'm pretty jealous, I bet it was cool and historical and stuff.

Depends. Do they check your passport when you leave Austin?

It gets celebrated, though the other stuff is why it was never made a holiday.
