So like, I'm not some webcomic vet like others around here, but when i joined the scene in 2004, voting sites were the shiz, okay? Like every site would have maybe 10 vote for me links on its page and even though then, it was a good way to get the word out, it was kind of silly, looking back on it. I'd laugh because the same 4 webcomics, all of whom were buddies, would be in the top 4 everywhere, probably because it had shonen-ai themes, or had pretty cel shading, whatever.
Anyway, it's 2009 (Wow..that long already?) and I can't seem to find any new webcomics that are decent, or having voting rings or whatever. I'm curious what happened between 2007 and now where voting sites are all gone and webcomics are just meh, and if there's a correlation between the two.
Or maybe I just grew up and the scene is just a lot smaller than I previously thought it to be. What are you thoughts?

Re: Voting Sites
I don't think she really meant that kind of voting...those awards are different.Bobadventures wrote:Seriously, though, here's a link to the thread about the Webcomics Choice Awards:
As for the VOTE FOR ME buttons, I just think people are past that kind of thing. Everyone is jumping into the social media things, and I think that will be the future of getting your work seen. Directories are just going to go out of style. People want things integrated and simple, and jumping through a hoop to give one vote for a comic you like isn't going to do it.
I took the vote buttons off my site. I'm just not going to mess with it. If people want to see my comics, they can put me in their favorites.

Re: Voting Sites
Well, one of the major vote for my comic sites went down. Now there's Top Webcomics and Webcomic Planet, ChoiceComics and TheWebcomicList. I've never gotten much traffic from them... currently StumbleUpon's one of the big things, and Twitter. Mmyep. Everyone with a webcomic is getting on Twitter now, or live feeds of drawing...
And there are plenty of great new webcomics! I can list a bunch, not just mine. /self promotion >_>
The webcomic scene is pretty rocking still, it's just in different places.

Re: Voting Sites
I think that types of promotion that are popular go in and out of fashion periodically. Right now it's social networking stuff, seems so.
I don't think that webcomics are worse than they used to be. I found several very good comics that have been around for year or less. It seems to be that they're getting mature and coming out of niche and stereotypes and that there's more authors who want to make something that doesn't belong to any of popular webcomic genres. It may be, though, that I just don't have patience to read another wacky roommates comic, so I quit those while I'm ahead.
But otherwise I think that things are ok.

Re: Voting Sites
The only times my rank has gone up on those is if I remember to vote for myself. Also one of my voting buttons broke.
