micheal jacksons dead

Post by Spaceprincess »

i was sad to hear of the passing of micheal jackson. i grew up in the 80's and he was a huge part of the pop culture of my youth. i still have my vinyl copy of thriller. it s sad that he had become such a shell of his former greatness. bad was my favorite ablum. smooth criminal was good too.

It was such an untimely death; nobody expected it.
Took the world by surprise.

I've had CNN on for the last couple of hours; funny how they can make 24-hour story out of almost now new information.

This is probably gonna be one of those "Where were you when ______?"

Like, the biggest things in my short almost 21 years of life that I can remember were: Death of Princess Diana, Biggie/Tupac deaths, Bush Election, 9/11, Iraq War, Obama Election, death of Michael Jackson.

There's something not right with the world when Michael Jackson's death is elevated to "where were you when?" status alongside the destruction of Challenger, the fall of the wall between East and West Germany, and 9/11.

And... CORGAN DANE??! Hey there!

Perhaps that's hyperbole, but guy was a giant in popular culture. One of the greatest entertainers of the 20th Century. This is a big deal.

Thing is, he was an entertainer. He may have been big in pop culture, and he certainly made massive changes for the music industry, but it's still not equivalent on any level to world changing events such as the fall of the berlin wall, 9/11, or the moon landing.

It's not even equivelent to things like challenger, Obama being elected, or The assasination Of JFk, which are more US-centric.

I think those wqho are comparing it to John Lenon or Elvis are probably about right though.

I mostly agree with your ranking, but the people are gonna decide the importance this has on their lives, and that he's just an entertainer is irrelevent. I also see nothing wrong with this being seen as a milestone event, and the only reason I would say it's not is because he hasn't made anything of great importance in 15 years.

The world knows Michael Jackson. But only a very small portion of the world care deeply enough to remember this event for the rest of their lives. I get and appreciate that there are people who will remember this day. But the fact some people will remember it, does not make a comparison to world-changing events valid.

Compare that to 9/11. If you were mentally able to comprehend and remember the event, you know what you were doing when you heard about the planes hitting the twin towers. And, you will remember it for when your children ask you to tell in show-and-tell, and your grandchildren too.

The collapse of the Berlin Wall. The photos of the collapse are so iconic that if you describe students attacking a wall with sledge hammers, or a hand poking through a hole, grasped by a dozen others, you KNOW the event the photo refers to. From a simple population standpoint, right now the entire childhood body of Germany has to learn about the fall of the wall in history class, and probably will so long as Germany is a country.

These are issues that the world remembers. Some people, maybe many people - devoted fans - will remember Michael Jackson's passsing and what they were doing when they heard. But the world will forget him.

He would have been forgotten already if people were going to forget him. Much like Elvis, he's not likely to be forgotten. There are already many MJ impersonators, I imagine that will go up now. World Events are important, World Leaders dying makes for important World Events, but that doesn't mean the death of a Great (with a capital G) Artist is also not an Important World Event. They may alter people's lives in different ways, maybe even more trivial ways, but they are definitely life altering and their deaths change the world in a way many things never can.

I guess people will be more likely to forgive him for delaying his concert dates now... they may have been pissed about buying airline tickets that were suddenly a year too early, but I think being near death is a pretty good excuse for flaking out on most things.
