SpiderForest Webcomic Collective now open for submissions!

Post by Metruis »

Some of you might know that in December, I switched webcomic hosts from ComicGenesis to SpiderForest. Anyway, they're open for applications again, from June first to the 24th! Information on applying and more information can be found on the apply page.

Yeah, you have to apply... and not everyone will make it in. But if you think your comic is a good fit with those already in the collective, or think you'd be a good addition, or just interested in what the collective has to offer, I encourage you to give it a try.

Feel free to ask me any questions.

Just thought I'd let you all know since I fairly recently moved from ComicGenesis (though I'm still mirrored here) to SpiderForest and thought some of you guys might be interested in checking it out. :)

EDIT: Since apparently two links to the apply page means spam sammiches, I've edited it. :shifty:
Also, joining SpiderForest will increase the size of your manhood--I mean, readership--and make her desire you.

Not to put too fine a point on it, but is this really an appropriate post? Sure, this is General Discussion for comic related things and all that, but you're basically posting on one company's site asking people to leave that company to go to another company.

ComicGenesis does make money for it's parent company from adviews on the comices represented here, so if you post asking to take comics away from here, you are taking money from Keenspot Entertainment, who provides ComicGenesis for the rest of us.

Just saying - if there's no other real strenuous objection I'll let it rest, but this thread really shows poor judgement in my opinion.

I think you're putting too fine a point on it, this isn't like a competitor trying to steal members from CG, more than it's someone recommending something that they are obviously satisfied with.

Worry not, ComicGenesis will weather this storm.

It sure reads like spam - excepting perhaps that it is comic related spam. It even has duplicate links to the application page. Even well meaning spam is spam.

I find it helps to change the wording. Here's the same post, but hocking a different resource:
Some of you might know that in December, I switched banks from Citibank to Vantage Credit Union. Anyway, they're open for applications again, from June first to the 24th! Information on applying can be found on the apply page.

Yeah, you have to apply... and not everyone will make it in. But if you think your finances are a good fit with those already in the bank, or think you'd be a good addition, or just interested in what the bank has to offer, I encourage you to give it a try.

Feel free to ask me any questions or check out the apply page for further information and directions, as well as the perks for joining. I've found my experience on there to be top notch and well worth the time.

(The official press release can be found here)
And it's worse imho, in that if someone follows the links and applies, they don't get a loan or cheap shoes or whatever - they get a new place to host their comic, meaning there's no reason to continue to host their comic here.

Thank you for your reassuring words, but I think Ryan's point was about it seeming a bit lacking in tact. I mean, he has TWO links to the application page in one post. It sure does read like "HEY, JOIN THIS PLZ", on a forum where, while a lot of the locals have other hosts, is still linked to a comic hosting system.

You may be right, but I wouldn't make a big deal of it. You might as well read it as an information on what's going on in comic world. CG always has people coming and leaving, it's kind of the idea.

And that's... bad?
I'm just saying there's probably better chance for exposure on something that's not as cluttered as comicgen.
The comicgen site can always stay up as a mirror, regardless.

Fine, fine, you'll have you excuse me. I've been deleting hundreds of spam crap from my comment system lately, from randomly generated names such as "www", "wwwqw", and lets not forget "erwt4geh" who are peddling everything from viagra to home lones to -let me randomly check my email for a second- "sexual history and character women report rape" and so on.
This post in comparison is tactful as hell to me. :p

I don't see this as being a problem. It's not a take-all webcomics host, they have an application process so it's not direct competition. It's closer to applying for keenspot than opening a drunkduck account or something.

Nobody cared when Cornstalker or Comic Dish made posts here.

So I don't see the problem and I wish you had posed this question in the admin forum rather than posting in the actual thread.

If a comic applies for Keenspot, they are still funding Keenspot Entertainment.

If a webcomic hosting site takes a comic that is hosted on ComicGenesis and hosts its elsewhere so that those advertising dollars (ok, pennies) are now in their bucket and not Keenspot's, then that's direct competition. It's about as clear an example of direct competition as you can write.

Cornstalker is a collective of comics that are hosted elsewhere, mostly on ComicGenesis. So this post is not like a post for that either. I'm not familiar enough with Comic Dish to say what it is similar to.

I am, as far as I can tell, the single most active reporter of spam creators in the Admin forum. I post there when someone needs to be banned and their posts removed. This surely doesn't call for that, so I posted in the thread instead.

Kolter I think you're honestly thinking way too much into this.

Anyways for everyone else I'm not a part of Spiderforest myself but I've heard lots of good things about it. If you want to know more about it talk to Net or NJ, both of which were on CG and went over to spiderforest and have had nothing but good words about it.

The chances of SpiderForest stealing more than one or two members of CG is very unlikely. Two whole CGers left last December and joined SpiderForest--me and Net. During that time, probably 20 new people joined and made comics on ComicGenesis.

Even if everyone on ComicGenesis suddenly thought OMG I MUST GET A DIFFERENT HOST NAOW and fled to SpiderForest, only a handful of them would make it in because the amount of applications accepted are fairly small in number. And I suspect those couple hundred pageviews a day aren't going to make much of a difference to Keenspot.

My comic is still hosted on ComicGenesis too, and I recommend it to all new webcomic creators. I recommend SpiderForest to anyone who wants next level hosting... like no queue lag... plus you can increase the size of your pe--I mean--readership with the exposure from the rotating top banner.

BAHAHAHAHAHA! people still do that? :P

Seriously though, i see spiderforest somewhat more discerning than Either DD or CG, they're a little more picky with whom they let in, wheras comicgen's more "come one, come all" a stepping stone to other hosts, or independent hosting.

I'm with your line of reasoning 100% Metrius, that's why I said the thread could stay.

All further replies should be about Spiderforest and not about moderating the topic.

Who's up for hot dogs?!

I did edit my first post to remove the second link to the apply page so it was a bit less spammy, though. :)

@McDuffies I'd be more worried about the men staring at them... myself, I don't actually drive. Small town, everything's in walking distance.
