Webcomic Hate
Re: Webcomic Hate
Way to derail a perfectly good negatively themed thread. I hate you. There! Back on topic!!

But HE is not a webcomic.Td501 wrote:Way to derail a perfectly good negatively themed thread. I hate you. There! Back on topic!!
You would have to indicate hate of his webcomic to get back on topic. Hmmm.

I like some webcomics and tolerate others. Hate is reserved for filler.
Re: Webcomic Hate
I get so annoyed when, reading archives, there's too much filler. So I resolved never to use it.

I hate it when comics don't update on time. Sigh. Mea Culpa. Have new content.

I also hate it when comics don't have an archive. LOL. I hope to be able to bribe my web guy this weekend.

Yeah, I know there's a comic called Filler, it's on my read list. But that's different. When it's a comic with a storyline... and every two pages there's a picture of a duck or a clown and SORRY I COULDN'T UPDATE TODAY, that's annoying.Bustertheclown wrote:I went the other way, and resolved to ONLY use it.Metruis wrote:I get so annoyed when, reading archives, there's too much filler. If the entire point of the comic is that, it's... a bit more forgivable.

Re: Webcomic Hate
Yeah, I agree. It's OK to put up a filler pic saying "sorry, missed an update" if indeed you missed an update - but those shouldn't make it into the comic archive, dagnabbit. There was an interesting-looking webcomic I tried to read recently, but I gave up before too long, as every third page was a "sorry, no update" pic. It really fucked up the reading experience.Metruis wrote:Yeah, I know there's a comic called Filler, it's on my read list. But that's different. Re: Webcomic Hate
I'm not established enough to even HAVE archives. I'm sticking with three days a week despite the size of my comic because I don't trust myself to update five times a week.

Re: Webcomic Hate
I think everybody should have archives, even people as new as we are. The moment you think "gosh it would be a serious pain in the butt to hit the next button enough times to get to where i would need to be" it's time to get an archive. That's the next change i want to make to my comic. I am leaning towards separate archives for main story and side story/filler, if there's a way to do that.
And three updates a week is really nothing to sneeze at. More than that, I think, is for established people can actualy expect to be compensated in some way in order to justify the immense amount of time one spends on such a project.

Re: Webcomic Hate
You do have an archive, even if you don't call it that: You click the "first" button and read forward from there. That's an archive of older strips. Of course, some people set up specific "archive" links that allow you to pick out a specific older strip at a glance, but that's just more detailed navigation; the old comics are there regardless. I have yet to see a webcomic where only the newest page is accessible, and the old ones are offline. (This is not counting comics that have disappeared entirely, such as Skirting Danger or Mullein Fields.)Dreamaniaccomic wrote:I'm not established enough to even HAVE archives. BTW, your first strips are big - so big that you have to scroll horizontally to read them. I don't hate it, it's just a minor inconvenience, but still - it's nice to not have to scroll horizontally when reading. The size you've got on your newest strips is fine.
Re: Webcomic Hate
I once tried to read a comic that was mostly filler. I think it was due to the author's trading off days, having no set plot, and every one wanting to introduce a new character each time their turn came.

Yeah, good idea to keep the sidetracked stuff out of the main archives.Industrialpowersart wrote:I think everybody should have archives, even people as new as we are. I've never seen anything amazing enough to read a once a month single page update yet. I'm working and pulling off three full color painted pages a week. It's not that hard to update regularly and commit to it, and I'm BAD at updating things. It just takes time management. I'm sure it'll be harder once I go to college, but meh. I'm working full time now and pulling it off...
I was sure I'd have to go down to one update a week... since every other serious fantasy comic I read is one a week or so... weird. It's not that hard. It's nothing to sneeze at, three a week, but I wouldn't call it HARD either. Some people are just wusses. ^_^ I said at the start "I'll do three a week, if I can't manage it, two, if I can't, one..." and since I commited from the top to three, I kept to it. I can't follow comics that don't commit to a schedule.
Five a week, and I'd be expecting to be doing it for more than free. But I find I lose track of the plot when following an infrequent updating serious comic... it's a bit less jarring with funnies that update irregularly. I still check one funny-only one out even though it rarely updates now.
Archives... I'm archiving by just adding a chunk to my archives page every once in a while. I haven't figured out how to do it, quite.. I'll have chapters seperately and each update, I just don't name my updates. They're just 1-1, 1-2, 1-3... etc... I should probably have 'first appearance of' on my cast page... I just don't know how to DO archives.
Filler... I swore from the top there would be no filler. If I have time to draw a filler page, I had time to draw my webcomic update. If I'm late, when I'm done, it goes up. Simple as that.
Re: Webcomic Hate
Wow, I'm barely managing two pages a week, I color the lazy way, and I have no life or job. You know, besides having friends and family who I sometimes cook food for. I guess maybe I have a pretty complex plot (which is still largely invisible to the naked eye).
Re: Webcomic Hate
I do a page a week.
I USED to be able to work a bit faster (3-4 pages) a week when I needed to get ahead to avoid drawing during the schoolyear, but over this summer I'm lucky if I do two a week...
