How many have comics in their buffers?

How many have comics in their buffers?

Post by Tarts »

Okay, I know there are a lot of people who are really busy with things besides webcomics, people who struggle to update once to thrice a week. But who are the ones who just... I mean... GOD, people who have comics in their buffers, and are just waiting for them to pop out on their front page. I wonder how many of that rare breed is here.

Oh yeah, is putting filler in your buffers pathetic, a crime, stupid, convenient, or whatever?

(if this topic was already posted... then... oops... >.>)

I used to often have up to five or six weeks in the buffer by the end of each school holiday, but I fear those days are gone. Tonight's the final night of the current holiday before I'm back to work tomorrow and I've managed to get myself four strips ahead. I'm right four a week and a half.

I have to start a new storyline then though, and I'm undecided on which way to travel in this case.

I don't put fillers into my buffer, although I do put up special strips for various occasions throughout the year, mainly days that correspond to Australian dates of prominence. An example currently is Anzac Day in a week and a half. I've timed the end of this short storyline to coincide with the appropriate date so I can post an Anzac Day strip the night before the official day. Then I'll start the next story afterwards.

It's not really filler, as I treat those as official strips.
Remember when your imagination was real? When the day seemed
longer than it was, and tomorrow was always another game away?

OBS... damn, man! What the hell! TWENTY-TWO?!?!? XD

I'm waiting for my site to update for the first time. I have 10 in my buffer so that should last me... 10 days. *sigh* I don't think I can keep that for very long.

I hold the unique pleasure of having negative buffer.

I'm currently sitting on an 8 day buffer for a daily comic, but it's only just started. Ask me again in a month or so...

You don't really need filler in the buffer since (by definition) you use filler when you don't have any comics. I know there are some comics that have "intermissions" between stories (such as the Anzac Day stuff Dutch mentioned) but that's not really filler. It's like a chance to free-draw between story arcs or to draw non-canon stuff with your characters (such as the 'alternatives' that used to be on during the closing credits of Daria on MTv... damn I miss that show. :(

Once I had a buffer of three months, but now since it takes longer to do the comics (curse you all for forcing me to improve!), I'm down to about just under a month.

Almost got it. 'Intermissions' is a good term for it, but personally I don't use them as free drawing or non-canon. Whatever is posted in the archive is canon as far as I'm concerned (at least with my own archive). But yeah, they are nice breaks from the general story.

I guess having a buffer is linked to how long it takes to draw each page...

I wish we had a 22-page buffer. That would be cool. *sigh* :(

...but who am I kidding? If we had like 22 pages, we'd just update with 22 pages that week. XD How can you keep all those pages to yourself?

So did we, back in the days... I think it's a good idea to have tomething for readers to dig in to from the start. Before you even launch, no one cares if you take a few more weeks to make a few more pages, right? :)

Yeah, it's the simpler comics that can have more stuff stockpiled away... I'd like to see a comic of Girl Genius quality that updates daily. Of course, that's a studio comic with several people working on it.

Or better yet, I'd like to be able to draw that fast. :(

Back when I was updating, I had about a week's buffer at all times. It was stressful anyway, but meh.

As for putting filler in your buffers... *slaps Tarts' wrist* Bad Tarts! Bad! That's the main thing your buffer functions to avoid.
This is going in my notebook titled "Things I Didn't Know about Surface Dwellers."

over Christmas vacation I had a nice, big month long buffer (that's 20+ comics for me since I do a daily)....but since going back to work, I've only had buffers for a week at a time.

I started on the Invasion storyline with a seven-day buffer. That's now gone, despite me getting help from a lot of people, but there's a comic uploaded for tomorrow and one for the day after on my drawing board. I'm just about keeping up.

I'll be taking a break after Thursday, and I will put filler in the buffer just so I can have that break. That won't be much, though. Just a long weekend and then I'll be shuffling the filler updates to the worldbuilding/cast sections.
