Two of the people who said they do not have tip jars have comics I would put money into a tip jar for.

I'm not saying who. :shifty:

Dude.

Seriously.

The more you shrink the diameter of that tube, the more pressure there will be. You'll eventually be firing single sperm at supersonic velocity. Every time you masturbate, you'll kill everyone in a 30 degree arc in front of you.

So he'll just have to stop masturbating in public.

Apart from my scanner and year at college, mostly rent/food/art stuff. Typical starving artist type.

For me there's no reason to put up a tip jar. You only put one up if you're doing something worth tipping.

Had a tip jar and nobody put anything in in 3 years. :(

So I took it down and put up google ads instead.

If I ever get my $100, it'll just go to webhosting. Even breaking even would be so cool.

I don't get anything from mine, but then I don't think I've ever actually mentioned it. If I put up a note that I'm doing an auction I generally get some extra bids that way.

I have been known to put $5 in a tip jar or two though. I don't like the idea of having one if I'm not willing to use other people's. 8-)

I could go for some drugs and women, right about now.

all my tips go to advertising.

'cept that one time I bought a pokemon game with it.

other than that, it's always gone to advertising.

I read an in-depth analysis of Apple Computer's recent success the other day and one of the very true things is said was that Apple provides amazing value for money. Their shops have free training, computers for people to simply sit down and use all day if they like - including for kids - and so on. iLife is basically shareware priced and iTunes provides free cover art for any and all music you own.

And so on.

I reckon it'd be far more effective if tippers got value for money. Wallpapers are kinda neh - you'd have to be a real fan to want your desktop dedicated to the comic anyway.

Just a thought.

I don't have a tip jar, simply because I'm privlaged just to have readers. All the tip I want, or need is comments in my shoutbox and the occassional fan-art. I love working on my comic, I'm content without the jar, people might get the impression I'm asking for a hand-out (though I've got no problem having the FCBD code on my front page).
Now paying for merchandise (if I ever get to that point, and can comprehend the intricacies of prepping pages for paper) is another matter.
Though if people forced money on me, then it'd go into art supplies, hiring someone to html code my site, pay for dinner out of the house for once.

Yeah that sounds like a good idea, but outside of porn I can't think of much most webcomic authors could offer that'd be of more desirability than wallpapers. I've seen a couple offer pins or stickers for a minimum donation but then you're treading a fine line between taking tips and selling merchandise.

Desirability is not the key, though. Value for money is different. That's not about giving people something new but something that enhances what they already want.

Apple doesn't give you an Apple poster with your iMac - it gives you training and software to let you get more out of it. And the iPod doesn't come with camera in the back - what has that got to do with music? - it gives you album art to complete the experience.

well, except food, I buy materials for my web comic: paper, pencils, ink and rubbers. I dunno if I can buy advertising now. :P

edit: if you ask, I never got money from my comic. I'm talking about the money my parents usually gave me when I'm going to college in order to survive . hehe. ;)

I had a tip jar for Mixed Myth. I love my fans dearly. This guy once donated $100. :o I promised to use it to get the MM book an ISBN number when the thing finally gets made.

Taking...so...long...

That's why I changed what my donators get. Now I give them the password to a gallery that has extra comics in it and wallpapers. Plus when ever the total reaches 100 I update on thrusday. So far it's working out fairly well. I use the money mostly on food and school supplies, but maybe 20% goes to advertising. Though right now I'm trying to get the money to fix my plane ticket to a convention.
