Respectable Unique Visitors

Post by Trpeterson1984 »

First off, I don't draw my comic for an ego boost or anything--but it's still nice to see people reading all of your archives and such... heh. :D

I was curious though: what's a respectable number of visitors at certain time periods? You know, like ten your first week or like 1,000 a week after two years...

Completely depends on the comic and your timing.

respectable is probably the wrong word, as a webcomic author, no respect will ever be involved

The key isn't to have unique visitors, but visitors willing to come back.

^What Ryclaude and Kris said.

Frankly, "respectable numbers" in my opinion only means that your audience is growing and will continue to grow. So long as you have more readers this year than you did last year, it's respectable. But hey, I'm lenient like that.

Unique visits are the number of times new IPs have visited your page in that one day. If the same IP comes back the next day, it shows as a new unique visit. You, er, can't really tell from stats whether people want to come back or not.

I dunno how you'd define respectable, but to be on the first page of the guide ie. in the top 25 of CGen, you need to be on about 1500 uniques a day, 2500-3000 to be near the very top. Most of the comics there have been going a few years.

Respectable? One visitor.. over the entire course of your webcomic.

One is the magical number when it comes to webcomics. Anytime you get one of something (visitor, fan, fanmail etc) it means that someone decided to give their time to do something for you.

Receiving my first fanmail was a great experience. To know that my work was appreciated was great.

But I'm getting off-topic.

As long as they keep going up, you could probably say that you're doing something right.

That being said, I'm always looking at my stats and griping about how slowwwwly the numbers increase.

The only times I've ever had any dramatic increases is when someone else has linked me.

If you're doing good work, eventually somebody influential (i.e., someone with a lot more readers than you) is likely to find you and link to you. In the meantime, take advantage of whatever PR avenues are available to you (like posting in the CG Forums), and be patient.

What Monroe said.

Up is good, down is bad. Free advertising and networking with other cartoonists is also good.

I'm one of those unrespectable unique visitors. I show up at your house and perform all manner of terrible things until you call the police or other local authorities and force me to make a haphazard escape.

You can certainly tell if you have regular readers - the actual chance that each day you have 40 different, utterly unique readers, each day, for the next 365 days, is very, very low. Most likely some of those 40 are regular readers.

IMHO, don't judge your comic by the number of readers. Judge it on something else. If you do the art for yourself, judge it by your effort. If you do your comic for your readers, then judge it on their response. If you do your comic for the hope of improving your art skill, judge it on how your skill has improved.

Judging your comic based on the number of people who happen to read it doesn't always work so well, especially if you aren't doing a comic genre that has a huge following. In some cases, just a few devoted readers, means more than a hundred non-devoted ones.

Yeah, what he said. The numbers can only really be judged on a comic to comic basis, but the main thing is are you happy with the job you're doing? If you do and you feel you deserve more readers than you're getting, you should advertise and draw more fanart for other comics. ;)

That said, my numbers have dropped the last couple of months, and that makes me a very sad panda.

I've given up on the numbers thing.

I still check them... but they don't really mean anything. As long as I'm enjoying taking the time to make something (or somethings) that's all that really matters.

You will sort of peak after a while, though. There's only so much time in a day and more comics constantly appearing.

I'd respect anyone with ONE GAGILLION READERS.

For a more realistic number...yeeeeah, numbers don't grab any respectability points from me when it comes to people reading your comic.

If you have people coming back to read your work, and to see how it's advancing story/artwise, then you're blessed. You've got people interested in what you do. Pat yourself on the back and don't leave us hanging. You're a winner, Champ...etc.
