Good-bye, White Hydra, hello... wait, crap.

Post by Guildmaster Van »

Ever since I started the new version of White Hydra I've recieved nothing but complaints about it. While my site still has an adequate amount of hits, I've only gotten one piece of fanmail since I restarted it, compared to two or three I'd get monthly with my first version. Everyone is confused by the story, and I don't blame them.

I blame myself.

It's not so much my story that is the problem so much as the medium in which I have chosen to do it. I've limited myself not only in my format and genre, but also in the amount of pages I have to tell it which forces my hand on some pages. I think the story I've developed is compelling and well thought out, but as it stands I have neither the means nor the time to bring my vision to life. I think it's time I put White Hydra to rest for the time being and pick up something new.

Everyone seems to like my brand of comedy, and I've never actually met someone who has had a complaint about the jokes in my flash animations or the first version of White Hydra. Sure, some are cheesey and lame, but some people like that.

White Hydra will live on, however. I think instead of doing it as a comic I will instead turn it into a proposal for an animated T.V. show to pitch to animation companies while I turn the site into a hub to display what I've been working on. It's only a matter of making a well-thought out display with character sheets for the principal characters, generic background character costumes, races, and the general look of Æthergard. I think the story I've come up with and its subsequent prestories would make a very good and memorable show.

'sides, there's just so much more I can do with animation than I can do on static pages.

In White Hydra's stead I want to return to my roots and do a comedy gag comic. The question is what exactly to do.

My humor is much better suited for buddy comics, but since there are so many out there I don't know how well it would be recieved. My art, as many have said, is also much better suited for comedy since it's so bright.

I would certainly appreciate some feedback on my decision (Or, more or less, validation that I've made the right decision), and maybe some ideas for alternatives to the buddy comic.

[A little known fact is I actually DID several pages of a buddy comic before I did WH in 2004, but I've since lost the fla and files. It was basicly me and my IRL friends douching it up... which is why it was called Douche*O*Rama. I think I posted the animated intro here some time]

Well, you need to be careful. I know you don't agree but if people think your art style resembles PA, then the wrong sort of buddy comic would make that even worse.

People stopped making that complaint over a year ago, actually.
It was the skinny necks and the ears that probably lead up to that in the first place, but pretty much all that influence has been expunged.

Neither do I. I think people were saying that because of inking. Inking styles in Flash often seem to resemble each other because the program has a lot of control over it.

when I first saw the art for WH I thought it looked like the PA. But I haven't looked at it a while, but its probably changed now.
