AMTGARD and webcomics.

Post by Jin-roh »

I friend mentioned that my comic yesterday was the first time he'd ever seen AMTGARD in a comic strip. But I can't really be the first. I'm actually surprised its not more common. Has anyone else put larping or such in their comic? I just think that kind of think is funny in-itself.

Could also be a DAT GRAM - you know, one gram of binary code.

I discounted that because I wasn't sure how one would measure the weight of binary code.

but at what font size? what if other people contradicted my measurement by printing it at a different size? I'd be a laughing stock!

Cute guys.

This is Amtgard. It's when you make padded swords and boff eachother. You also "level up" and get to use imaginary specail abilities.

I looked it up!

It appears to be the fantasy version of Society for Creative Anachronisms. Neato Mosquito!

I think it would translate into most comics as generic LARP, JinRoh. I'd never heard of it until this thread.

Oh. We didn't have a name for it. We just made our own swords out of pvc and camping foam following the specifications from the Illinois State Univerity Combat club. We didn't do the level up thing, just fight on the quad before dinner every once in a while. Though now I remember the word. I just thought everyone was saying Ampguard and I never really questioned it. Also, my favorite sword isn't legal to use in official combat because I wanted one that I could use like a rapier so it has one less layer of foam than the requirement.

And it's funny you brought it up because there's going to be a scene of two characters fighting with boffers pretty soon in my comic. The sequence has been planned for over 2 years now and I'm just now getting to that because I'm slow when it comes to updating. I wrote the outline on the backs of receipts and post-it notes on a bus in British Columbia. Scrap paper was all I had at the time and didn't want to forget anything. I just carry a small notebook everywhere I go now.

Right. We called it 'swords' when I was growing up...but Down Here we aren't clever enough to have fancy names for stuff.

That reminds me of a scene in Cop & 1/2. Burt Reynolds gets peed on.

Ignoring the comments about me saying "Back in the day..."

Back in my days, we used broomsticks as swords, willow branches as whips, and heavy sticks as clubs, and we beat the crap out of each other. And loved every minute of it!

If you were lucky, you had a trash can lid as a shield, but they were metal lids and it shook your hand something awful when you used it to deflect a blow.

The first time I did it, someone had some bokken (wooden Katana). There were many bloody fingers that day.
