Oh WHY did i do that?

Post by KOMP »

ever put stuff in the comic, you in the long run feel like,
oh wow wtf was i thinking. like certain gags.

i myself in the beginning of the comic put some really horrendous
"anime-ish" sight gags for no reason, becaus ei thought someone would laugh at it. this triggered my repulsion, because i saw it done in the first season of teen titans. it's horribly unfunny, like having one of the characters,
a bishi-ie type guy holding a freaking rose while his eye sparkled for
comedic effect. and i reduced one of my characters to Ed (of cowboy bebop)
playfulness. so i'm guilty of that, and i dunno if i should jus wipe that right of the archives.

any of you falter and do things out of character or context, or just drew really bad crap that you wear as a badge of honor for growing pains?

Four words: "thou," "dost," "thy" and "tis."

I originally thought a good way to show the difference between the main character and the other Elves would be to insert more-or-less random archaisms into the other Elves' speech. By the end of the second strip I was already sick of it and decided never to do that again.

For some reason 'though I didn't go back and change those strips.

If I remember correctly that was about the time Cartoon Network first sarted playing Inuyasha and I noticed how irritating the random archaisms in Kaede's speech were. I think that was after I'd stopped using them myself 'though.

Other than that I think I probably should have made the scene with the King and the Choreil a little less foreshadowy since the stuff it foreshadowed hasn't happened yet and probbably won't for some time.

There's a lot of things I've drawn, and don't remember why I drew them and then wished I hadn't. Normally it's an overly sexual pose that for some reason I thought was interesting at the time, but now realize that it was in bad taste. Maybe I was trying to overcompensate my lack of artistic ability with overly suggestive material? I dunno. I've tried to cut back on blantenly sexual poses, as I perefer the mildly suggestive ones better. I think it has more class.

I hope you won't try to cut them out too hard...

Well, the thing is I don't really draw the characters the way I do because I think it's hot. I mean sure, I'd like to think they are and a lot of people have told me they are. But I personally am just a very, I dunno... I can't think of a word. I want to say flirty, but that's not entirely right. I just enjoy getting reactions from people, I suppose. The main reason I do what I do is because I like to make people go :o . But I like to retain a bit of class in my work. I know that drawing near-porn is not really classy, but i want to at least keep it on a level where it doesn't simply turn into smut. I try to give a bit of alure and sensuality to the characters, and not just be like, 'Oh look! Boobs! Yay boobs!'. I actually spend the most time on a characters face. Because if the face doesn't look right the rest of it falls apart.

I used to throw out most of more controverse or personal scenes. That way, I used to throw out some of the best stuff, so nowadays I try to keep those "what was I doing" moments in. Sometimes I miss, but sometimes I think that's where the comic gets real flare.

NO REGRETS!

I've never deleted a strip just because I have a different approach to the comic now - it's all a part of their history. Heck, there are things I've done that aren't like me now, but even the act of growing past those things becomes a part of who I am. I think the same goes for my characters.

...Or that's just a philosophical way of justifying how lazy I am. ;)

You don't HAVE a lack of artistic ability. You have artistic ability in bundles. Oodles, even.

I ment while I was still learning. I won't be one of those people that cries 'I suck!' all the time because I don't think I do. But there was a time when I DID suck, and during that time, I did some really stupid things with my art to try and compensate.

I would have to say all of Chapter Zero for me. NC has gone through many transitions since it started, and Chapter Zero was not only a format nightmare, but it also saw the comic briefly in black-and-white, as a gag-a-day strip, had a severe lack of continuity, and very cliche. On the whole, I have thought about deleting it and remaking the whole thing, but I'm saving that for if the book ever gets made.

I have regretted some of the answers I have written for the questions I've done. You can really tell when I was hurried and didn't do all my research or plan out how to say what I wanted to say.

I treat my comic like a jam most of the time - and especially in the earlier comics. Lots of times I looked back and thought "Dammit, why did I DO that?" but once it was in the comic, I couldn't simply undo it. So I ran with it the best I could.
Strangely enough, with one very bizarre crossover everything sort of fell into place. Now the comic sort of makes sense again, although I've left a lot unexplained and have to make a lot of wordy comics to catch up to myself.

Yeah, I the way I compressed the first about twenty comics.... I'm gonna go back and change that though....Hope I still have the PSDs and FLAs.

Usually, the things I regret most are things said spur-of-the-moment in forums.

I colored Alice's eyes blue in one of the pictures..

Thsi doesn't matter because it's sepia toned in the comic

Most of my other "why's" is stuff I hit in the writing that I have difficulty drawing...Like the table scene in chapter 2 at the club. I HATED that scene and constantly said "WHY did I write a table scene, I HATE drawing table scenes" but it was breif and needed to be done.

The good thing about a short comic is that there's no time for frivilous things that don't matter, you have to get all the plot points in that you can.
