wait... you can actually make money at this?

Post by Captainclover »

so who makes money at this? whether it's on advertising, merchandise, books... etc. and how much? if you don't mind disclosing... just out of my own personal curiosity.

my dad's on my case about how i'm doing this thing and i make no money at it ever since he met the guy who runs joecartoon.com. but i still stick to my guns that i haven't been around long enough and i don't feel confident enough in my art to actually CHARGE for these things... still feels like i'd be ripping people off, lol.

so let's have it... what're you raking in aside from fuzzy feelings?

This hobby makes no money for 99.99999% of people.

I am one of them.

Thanks for caring!

I have made some money. Mostly because i told my readers if the donations reach a certian amount I'd update more. It's working pretty well. Made $300 last month and made also $200 so far this month.

If I were to make any money, I figure it'd be from trying to sell stuff with my characters on it, but before I can do that I need to:
1. Draw better
2. Have stuff to put on the merchandise
3. Find a place to make the stuff that won't rip me off or produce crap.

So far the planets have not aligned in my favor.

Draw better, KKB?! :o

I keep going back to your site just to keep checking out the patriotic lady you've got as an avatar. ^_~

I KIND OF make money off of my comic already since my books take place in the same universe, regardless of the lack of crossovers at the moment. Still, I intend to make money off of it when I finish issue 6 and release a TPB of all those comics. ^^

If people host their comics on Comicgen it's a pretty good sign they're not making any significant money on them yet...

I dunno. I hear Ghastly makes a decent amount. Not enough to live on, of course, but enough to support himself without the CG ads.

By begging and pleading extra hard, I raised enough cash to pay my "mansionofe.com" hosting fees for a couple of years. So it's possible to make a little pocket change, at least.

yeah, i don't really plan on making money. the only reason it's on my mind is cuz my dad is weird and doesn't understand the concept of drawing for fun. i think it'd be neat to get some merchandise out there, just because i like designing clothes, but we'll see. like KKB said... it's hard to find a place that won't rip you off and won't produce crap.

i guess i was just mostly curious to see if anyone was making money and how they were doing it. since i'm moving out, i figure if i get that desperate it's GOTTA be better than hooking..right?

also, another idea that i saw on The Lounge, is making backgrounds and images that have special uncensored versions for a cost. but i have no idea how much money he actually makes from that.

I've pretty much screwed myself out of that option.

Oh man, sorry... Yeah I'm NEVER going to be making a DIME off this. 1. I suck and will never produce ANYTHING worth paying money for. 2. I will never be popular enough or clever enough to produce merchandise. 3. I will never produce any wallpapers or extra comics or whatever that donating money will ever be worth while for. 4. I mentioned I SUCK, right?

But that's me. So far my goal is to never spend a cent on this comic that would be me on a negative track record. So far I'm good. The ONLY purchase for this comic has been a digital camera that I needed ANYWAYS so it isn't really for the comic.

It can be done, making money. But it's hard, takes patience and effort, and some serious talent with a good bit of luck. If it's your goal, I wish you best of luck.

If you have enough readers that you can go independent and pay off your hosting with ads, then you're doing really good.

I've made a grand total of 400 so far, through donations, and people send me nice things once in a while. Prismacolor markers is the nicest thing I've ever gotten, and I got a huge discount on a Gamecube through a fan who works at an ebgames.

I put most of that money back into advertising, kept the rest to pay for hosting next year. I still have yet to try the donation wallpaper idea...I'm planning on giving that a shot.

Gotta keep the ads running, yo. :D

Nada, zip. We've never been in a position to accept money just because of how the comic is run.
