There are several comics (both French and not) available for viewing on Coconino World, which also happens to be a bloody awesome comics art site in general. I don't know if these strictly qualify as webcomics, as most of them have previously been - or are going to be - published in book or magazine form.

There are many French comics authors who use blogs to post short comics, these surely must count as webcomics.

I once planned to translate my comic into Thai, but after attempting to do the first 5 comics (back when I first started, no less) I discovered the jokes didn't translate well and weren't all that funny... but I think I would have done better if I had a bigger vocabulary in thai. 5 years later, all I've retained is how to talk about food.

That's why I'd like to translate my comic myself. If a joke or situation doesn't work in the target language, you can change it to something that will rather than having to explain it at the bottom of the page or something.

well... if you ask someone to translate something, and if this person is a professionnal (or a good one) he'll adapt jokes !
I've started the translation of type mismatch, and discoverer the moutain of problem caused by translation : bubbles to small for the new text, pun/jokes impossible to translate, etc... I like this kind of chalenge
But I understand that you'd prefer to translate it yourself as you'll know the way you want the comic to be...

I was just saying that translating is more difficult than some people think it is. You have to keep a lot of things in mind while doing it.

But that's why I'd like to do it one day, because I like the challenges involved in making language work .

I actually translated parts of my comic a while ago, but I found that while my grasp of formal, written French is adequate enough, my knowledge of everyday language - slang and such - is woefully inadequate, and nobody wants to read something that sounds flat and dry and boring like some sort of essay. Translating a comic properly involves the ability to give your characters different voices, which is something that it takes forever and ever to be able to do.

Closet I've done to translations is back in elementary school when we had to do a skit done completely in french. Man it was so basic.

We did that in high school. Every year, the language classes had to put on a world celebration production. The Japanese Class always did movie spoofs. I made Kisai suffer through Jurrassic Park the Petting Zoo and I'm only in it long enough to get eaten.

Heh. My senior year in Spanish class, we had to make a short movie, including commercials. We did "Zorro vs. the Mafia".

I think the best is to translate from a learned langage to your native langage. Else, it's REALLY hard...

But translators are trained for that. By that statement I think that you belittle the work that translators put to their work. I'm study it so I should know. It's not all fun and no work.

Do you mean that you'd take translating your comic as a challenge or that you'd take translating as a challenge in general?

I myself am dreaming of tranlating my own comic from English to Finnish some day. Put I'd be translating it from a learned foreign language to my native language.

The point I was trying to make was that translating is hard work and that the only person who knows with absolute certainty what a particular work's tone, intent, etc is the author his/herself. Therefore if it's possible for the author to do so, it's easiest for him/her to do so.

You're not the only one who's studied translating .

seriously, Ace-147 was almost a french comic but i decided against it and went for language with the most reach. Even though english is my second language, i like to think that i'm doing allright. I still have a few translated comics lying around. The trick is to keep your photoshop files (or whatever program you use) with the layers intact so if you need to change text you can modify the speech bubbles as well.I'm guessing your artist friend may still have them so you could ask him/her, that'd make things easier.

and the one who said translating jokes is the toughest thing ever is completely RIGHT! a lot of french humour is unusable in english and vice versa, so that makes things a lot more complicated.

I know there are some french and other language comics out there. The person who does Dragon Mail has his comic in English and Spanish. *is too lazy to find the url*

I know a few webcomics on Serbian actually.
