Gawd, here I go breaking up the positive vibes.
I was baffled as to what to say for a while. You've made no argument against the opinion expressed, merely launched unneeded attacks against me. This is obviously impolite and could hardly lead to some kind of thoughtful discussion, so what sensible reason could there be for it? I would think this is above you.
You have charged that I was basically pretentious and full of it when I expressed my view, scurrilous accusations which have no bearing on what I said. The only intention it could have was to impugn the sincerity with which I did very much express my view. It does not address whether my personal assessment of behaviour in question was accurate, which would be the topic in a meaningful discussion. We could politely discuss for instance, if you object to my expressed opinion that the mob insulting of doom was wrong, for whatever reasons. We could have a discussion on that. That would make some kind of sense. But these are mere insults. You made a mostly unrelated list of what you think is wrong with me as a person, as a kind of grounds for why I should thus not "lecture" others, i.e., not politely express my opinion about a situation alongside everyone else who is doing the same.
As for the general charges of hypocrisy for which you accuse me, among other things. I consider it seriously, and think it is wrong. Putting aside the incredible exaggeration that I violated the basic principles of forum etiquette I just advocated "a thousand times" before, it is only correct that I would be guilty of hypocrisy, and my integrity therefore impugned, if I did not apply to myself the same standards I apply to others. It is not enough that I have acted rudely on occasion also, which I have never denied. If I, for instance, condemned others for such actions, but did not equally condemn myself when I acted similarly. That would be hypocritical of me and wrong. This is not the case. I am and have long been rightly regretful and apologetic for numerous occasions where I acted rudely and insultingly. I acknowledge and apologize for instances where I have acted badly. This has never been denied, nor do I think my post implied some kind of ethical superiority on my part. In fact, the comments about not living in an ideal world of manners and perfect moral agents, learning from mistakes and improving ourselves was quite consciously referencing my own indecent follies also. I was certainly not trying to imply some status as a kind of moral leader. Far from it.
As for the talk of involvement in drama, yes. Drama is my favourite subject. Har har. Anyway, I do not think "drama", whatever that means, is somehow necessarily condemnable. There is no reason why taking part in big arguments and so on is inherently rude. I didn't bother to argue against any abstract "drama", or for some kind of abstract "peace" against such "drama", just that everyone calling a guy mean names for a seemingly honest mistakes seemed wrong. I fail to see some reason for why these vague references to my involvement with the occasional "drama" in the past has anything to do with what I said, or how it could possibly undermine my opinion in this particular.
In short, I feel there is little reason for these attacks. I have no desire to get involved in some fight with you about my personal flaws. Beyond that, I also don't want this irrelevant thread to be treated as more meaningful then it is. I expressed an opinion on what I thought about how people were attacking some guy for thread ressurrection. It was a short and one-off post. It has little real significance. There is no reason to be terribly riled up one way or another.

Though acting badly in response is not a proper way to rectify the situation.
In the ideal world of manners, the situation would unfold as follows:
1. Individual mistakenly resurrects thread.
2. Forumites express their displeasure at the act of resurrecting a thread, explaining that is considered inappropriate. Such actions taken with disregard to the desires of the broad forum populace shall be treated as wrong.
3. Resurrector apologizes, informing that he acted without malice or intentional disregard to normal forum manners, and that he will refrain from resurrection in the future.
But we do not live in such a world apparently. But hopefully all of us can learn from our mistakes and strive toward it, that we may live together more harmoniously.

Every time you return to the forum, I say to myself "Gee, hopefully Goob will be less full of it this time" and every time you prove me wrong. Look at this: a few hours after you've returned, you're already giving lectures to everyone as if you're "the wise man of the forum". You, who threw a fit more times than I can count, are calling us on peace? You are speaking with the authority that you don't have, sending messages that you broke thousand times, every time you dissapear from here, it's after one of big dramas regarding you - and here you jump into one such drama right from the door - you don't even bother to wipe off your feet first.

C'mon, you think anyone would keep a moderator role if they played merry hell doing the sort of stuff you've just listed? Of course they wouldn't. Let's keep the debate in the scope of reality instead of the extremes, eh?Mercury Hat wrote:Think of all the things I could be doing as mod (locking threads for the slimmest of reasons, reporting people to the admins for the slightest transgression, telling off anyone I don't like), then compare to what I'm actually doing and see whether I'm really as trigger happy as you're accusing me of being.
A thread's been resurrected. By somebody with a post count lower than a snake's belly. A select few jump on the thread afterwards to basically sling abuse at this person, and then the thread gets locked along with a warning for the 'necromancer' and nothing said for the unneccesary abuse they received by others who wouldn't know them from a fence post.
Secondly, I keep my mouth shut on most issues I see around the joint, and usually only leave a single comment suggesting something if I do have something to say on issues I disagree with. I reckon that the last few months have probably seen the most locked threads I've ever counted since I wandered over here. There have even been a few threats of reports to admins if people so much as mention certain topics or post in threads again. I stand by my belief that at times moderators can get a little trigger happy here.
I also stated that it's one of the few minor negative concerns I have about the joint. Again, it's a job I wouldn't touch with a barge pole and am glad you lot are doing it, but from my point of view it's something to be aware of.
If you're concerned that it's you specifically I'm accusing here (although in this case I think you erred in your reaction), then let that thought go. As others have said, personally you're doing a decent job. My comment was for the moderators plural.
Enough from me on this for now. It's an issue I've noted for a few months and just thought it was time to let people be aware how I've seen things.
Maybe it's just a generational gap between us...if I saw this sort of treatment with the kids in the classroom they would have spent lunchtime sitting inside.
Cheers.

Meh. Doom knows necromancy isn't a good idea. I guess I should have reminded him after the second incident, but I didn't want to be "trigger happy," as it didn't seem to bother anyone. In any case, the mod (Merc) behaved just fine, just as she should have. Everyone else in the thread could've been more polite, but they could've been less. Then there's this thread. Can't blame anyone for overreaction here. Hopefully Doom will know better next time.
I think in general, though, we can all be more welcoming and understanding. In this case, yeah, Doom's trying to make a spectacle of himself and it's irritating. The other recent case involving Ratbalista is another matter. We labeled him as a problem just because of one silly thread. We were all new here, and we all made mistakes. How about some understanding before we make accusations from now on?

Bah, this thread has turned very very boring.
Faith is what credulity becomes when it finally achieves escape velocity from the constraints of terrestrial discourse- reasonableness, internal coherence, civility, and candor. Thus, the men who commited the atrocities of September 11 were neither cowards nor lunatics of any sort, but Men of Faith- perfect faith- and this, it must finally be acknowleged, is a terrible thing to be.

Alas, not even random stabbings of Blackaby can save this thread.
