Well, I got my first fanmail the other day...

Post by Wishmaster »

"Hey, man, just wanted to let you know I really dig your comic. I was informed you had a Flying Spaghetti Monster comic and it went from there! Beautiful stuff! Keep on keepin' on!
-Your New Stalker"

I shouldn't be worried that they signed it Your New Stalker, right? I mean, that's just how people on the internet try to be cute these days, isn't it? Anyway, it's gratifying to know someone is reading this stuff, though it was an uncomfortable coincidence that I received this during a temporary lack of internet service and the comic hasn't updated in a week or so. Now I have to redouble my efforts.

Still, a little praise goes a long way. I'm like a cactus. I don't need a whole lot of water, just a little.

Most mail I get is people asking about the names of the characters. One guy had the same last name as one character, and another person made up the name Kadeo and was worried about it not being originally, but I informed him that I'd come up with it after him, yet even then, there were lots of Kadeo things, even a Kadeo.com.

The only other one I can recall was basically one line about my comic and then a paragraph about the person's own comic. I take pride in never whoring myself onto anyone :P the best way to attract interest is to subtly peek curiosity.

I love fanmail. Probably because I've had so little of it, four or five tops. All of them have been very generic. "Hey, nice comic, keep up the good work."

I did get emailed once a year or two ago about someone having the same name as one of my character's, but this was precomic.

Some cheeky bastard did a search engine check yesterday to find me using the thread 'school spirit comic genesis -IamstalkingthatstudDutch!'

I don't think you need to be worried about the 'stalker' claim. Most of the time they just think they're being funny.

Cheers.

Once I got a fan letter that basically said, "I think your comic is good, except for the art..." Needless to say, I was a bit peeved. But we sorted it out. He wasn't a bad guy, he just spoke his mind...

I think hate mail would be a bit more lively. less if they start talking in n00b or something.

No, you better lock your doors, change your phone number and cut all the trees in the street. When someone says they're your stalker over the internet, they usually mean that. :P

Fan mail is noce, it warms your heart. I haven't gotten any lately, but then again, my work has been a bit clunky lately too.

Oooh! I should do that one time with a webcomic pair (where one does the art, the other the writing ;)). Just a joke of course... mostly anyway.... mostly.....

Don't worry, a lot of people try and throw some humour into their fanmail and "your new stalker" is a common occurance. Fanmail gets much much creepier.

I think it takes more care to write fanmail than to write hatemail.

Actually, this gives me a good idea...
