Two questions about a domain of my very own

Two questions about a domain of my very own

Post by Dutch! »

Yep. Two questions. Answer both if you can, neither if you can't. That's generally the way questions work, eh?

First...I figure 200 odd comics means it's about time I think about a domain name of my own because I guess that sort of number means it's relatively established. Also, I've got pretty well ongoing work until I retire in forty years so I can probably afford the $9 a year even being as tight as a fish's as I am.

So...question one. I know you can get a domain name of your own and still keep the site here, which is what I'm planning on doing. How does that work? Do I get in touch with someone here, or does it magically happen on its own like dandruff? I'm guessing the former.

Next...question two. Some bastard's taken schoolspirit.com...any ideas what would be the most appropriate name to take seeings the most appropriate's already been taken? :) I'm thinking schoolspiritcomic.com, but that could be considered a little lengthy.

Your thoughts on the matter?

On name.
Hyphenate as school-spirit?
Or use an au URL. Although that may be difficult for some people to remember.

nothing too major, youll need your domain, then you speak to kisai or redwolf about parking it here at CG, youll have to do some stuff like changing the nameserver settings with your domain provider, and then you wait.

forever. >_<

Have you checked into different suffixes?
Schoolspirit.au, Schoolspirit.nu, Schoolspirit.net, Schoolspirit.tv, Schoolspirit.web, Schoolspirit.org, Schoolspirit.ac, Schoolspirit.edu ecetera

(just don't use SS.com because you'll get heaps of hits from people looking for jackboots)

http://www.schoolspiritcomic.com doesn't seem to be taken.

You may buy your domain and have the CG servers use it instead of your .keenspace.com/comicgenesis.com domain. I did it with mine.

Thanks for the quick replies.

school-spirit.com is also taken by some greedy bastard so I can't use that one either! :)

I've thought about having schoolspirit.com.au for the Australian suffix, but it's more expensive, and it's another suffix to remember so I'd rather go for the straight .com. I've thought hard about this too, remembering how much Australian crap I include in the comic itself!

Yeah, schoolspiritcomic.com is the front runner at the moment, and it's available. I was concerned it might have been a little lengthy, but it's probably the one I'll go with.

So basically I just get hold of the name, give you a holler, Stredwolf, and have to change something on site somewhere, eh? Doesn't sound too hard. Am I missing something?

Register the domain,
Make the domain's DNS servers ns3.keenspace.com and ns4.keenspace.com.
Give me a hollar.
Make sure I do it, because I've been slipping. :(

Okies. I think I've done all that...(yes, this was only going to ever be a short thread before I actually went and did it).

I've registered schoolspiritcomic.com and it seems I've correctly set the name servers to ns3 and ns4.

It tells me there's about a two day wait for it all to be fixed up. So I guess this is your 'holler' to ask you to wave your magic wand and do the redirecting stuff for me.

No rush. Seems you've got two days! :)

Dutch,

It took about 36 hours for me to switch the comicgen addy that I was using over to the new abh-comic.com addy. During that time things can be a little wonky with updates.

It's a good thing you did it on a weekend, because I think I did mine on a Sunday and had a bit of a sweat worrying about weither or not it would transfer over in time by Monday morning.

Ah...well...yeah, I did it on a weekend...but remember I'm already two thirds of tomorrow ahead of you!

Anyway...if it plays silly buggers with the updates for a day or so that means one of the strips may be late coming up and I can just lay it down to comicgenesis playing up again, eh? ;)

We'll see how it all pans out though. I've always maintained that, no matter how much anybody may enjoy reading the strip, it's not that important that you can't wait a day or two for the next little bit.

Good luck on the move. Feels good to have a name of your own doesn't it?

Until the nameservers showed up and workd, I had my address redirect to my keenspace site. Of course that meant that when the nameserver stuff started to work, it redirected in a circle for a bit...

Hmmmm...maybe I'll overcome my cheapness someday and get my own domain name. Maybe.

Kisai got my domain setup if not the same day I asked then the next. My archives were mauled for a couple days because my domain hadn't sufficiently propogated through the Internet, but once that happened, everything's been cool.

You don't even need to get off your ass to do it. A domain name can be registered form a sitting position.

If you get your own domain, if people link to your comicgen address, does it still go there okay?

Folks will automatically be redirected to the new domain.

For example, try going to stalag99.keenspace.com.
