Keenspace err.. ComicGen Sampler #3 (1?) - Submissions

Post by Faub »

Welcome to the third installation of the Keenspace Sampler.
We can now use the Comic Genesis name and logo!

We need submissions in the following categories:
  1. Front Cover art including title text and ComicGen CG logo
  2. Back Cover art
  3. Introduction text and/or multiple submissions, ads, etc for the intro page.
  4. 27 pages of content
The inside front cover will include a list of all submitters and links to their respective comics.
The inside back cover will include copyright information.

The Rules
(circa Volume 1. I haven't updated anything in here, but it's got a lot of good info still.)

Volume 1
Volume 2

Rules for Submission of Content:
  • PG-PG13 only. No nudity, graphic violence, excessive cursing. Suggest all you like.
  • No copyrighted content except your own. Sprite comics will not be allowed to submit unless they can prove they made their own sprites. No Evil Bert pics. That kind of thing.
  • Please include a content rating, especially if your comic contains mature content. (That might attract readers, who knows?)
  • Include your own copyright notice on your page. There will be a copyright page, but only to show the license of the book itself. The individual works are still yours.
  • Include your comic's title and/or URL if you want people to be able to find you.
  • Pages may be voted out by a simple majority of the other authors submitting. It's a group effort. You want to make the group look good, not just yourself.
  • You need to have a comic with at least some kind of archive to submit. The comic does not need to be on Keenspace since we aren't allowed to plug Keenspace. At least 20 comics online will make a good base but we can take it on a case-by-case basis (such as, you have more comics in your buffer than you have online).
  • Those who appeared in the previous sampler are allowed to make submissions but people who were not in the previous sampler get dibs on the pages. If we have too many submissions, new people people get in. Old people get to wait for volume 4.
  • Brief story comics are preferrable to single page ads. Try to limit the storylines to 2-3 pages, though. Take up too much space and you risk getting dropped because too many people submitted pages. There are no requirements for subject matter, only content requirments.
Submission Specs for Content Pages:
  • Page Size: 3000 x 4500 pixels. Draw right up to the edge of this area.
  • Colors:Grayscale or 2-color Black & White only.
  • Font-size: easily readable if printed on half a letter-sized page or half an A4 page. (In GIMP I use 70-pt Anime Ace or Digital Strip.)
  • File Formats: PNG, GIF or TIFF is preferred (no loss of data due to compression). JPG will work if you have a lot of grayscale, but it's not recommended.
Submission Specs for Cover Art:
  • Page Size: 1650 x 2550 pixels. Draw right up to the edge of this area.
  • Colors: 24-bit RGB or CYMK is preferred
  • Font-size: Big and bold!
  • File Formats: PNG, GIF or TIFF is preferred (no loss of data due to compression). JPG will work, but it's not recommended.
Submission Date: October 1 or whenever we get 27 pages collected after this date. Once the Voting thread goes up, submissions will be closed and you'll have to wait for the next issue.

If the rules or requirements should change at any time during this thread's life, I'll change this post.

I will submit something, somehow, for this. It will even be drawn.

I'd be happy to put the PDF together again, and I'll do it faster this time, I promise!

Just be sure to save your files with 600 DPI and 3000 x 4500, and if they're line art (pure black and white) make them bitmap instead of grayscale for indexed color so the edges won't get fuzzy. I actually prefer TIFF files if you can save them because InDesign prefers them that way (using LZW compression is OK), but I have a Photoshop action all set up to turn the files into properly-formatted TIFF files so InDesign can bring them all together without any trouble.

Let me know when all the files are good to go and I'll crank out a PDF for ya.

I am really tempted to try to pull off a black and white sprite strip... I'll see if I can 1. Get off my arse and 2. If it will look good.

Remember that you have a very limited palette of colours. Although you can do grayscale, the majority of comics will br printed on b/w laser printers which don't tend to manage grays particularly well. Best to stick to about three shades of gray, say 25%, 50% and 75%.

I'll keep that in mind. It'll be particularly limiting, it'll be a nice challenge at the least. =]

I'll probably do it & in the form of a 1-page ad thing, I'll see, I'm really very impulsive w/ this kinda stuff so I'll see.

Caveats and all, I'll either submit my submission from last time (2 pages) or do something new, same length.

Faub: Your post is copied from something that says "we can't plug keenspace". We CAN plug Comic Genesis, so an edit might be in order.

I'm not sure how decent of a submission I could do for this. I could give it a shot once all my stress is over though.

I'll do something for this for sure I think...I've been wanting to tell a little short story outside of the confines of the comic-strip format.

Oh, and it may seem like a dumb question, but it doesn't say anywhere in your post...where and who do we submit our stuff to? Do we just post it in the thread here or what?

I've told Derenge that he still has vestiges on Keenspace so that's good enough. The same goes for those who've "moved" to stripspace.

And don't forget for the next UK get together, there are already 2 samplers for you to download.
