Do you have to be born a good artist?

I know a girl who played in the flute section with me. She was awful. She knew it, the band director knew it, everyone knew it. But she loved it, and tried so hard. She practiced nearly every day, but her improvement from the 8th grade to the 12th grade was barely noticable. She tried other instruments, and fared no better. She wasn't stupid, either - she did decently in school, I believe.

I guess she was one of those exceptions.

Oh! I used to go off pitch whenever singing and never realized it, I did that whole annoying "closed pallete" thing, and I didn't know what a vibrato was. Blah blah blah, I worked hard, learned to stay on key, learned to open my damn mouth when singing, and learned fancy-pants vibrato. I still have an ugly voice, but at least it's in tune and stylized!

I miss music class. ;__;

To distinguish tones, pitch and depth, you do need the proper equipment to detect it, though. Tone deaf people lack the equipment, or rather, their gear lacks the needed "specs".
Well in every report I've read on tone deafness its been treated a psychological issue. Not a physical one. Maybe in my world I'm one of those people who don't settle. I don't do with limitations placed on me. And to me things are excuses.

Looking at me now most people wouldn't believe that I use to have braces on my legs, and walked on the sides of my feet. Most people who talk to me wouldn't believe that I was told I'd never have good balance and even walking long distances would happen. I was never taught hand writing in elementry school cause of my cordination. I was also in learning disability classes.

Now I know I'm not a great artist or musician myself. there are lot of people way better than me. but I don't think for a moment that would say I can't do anything cause I was borned a certain way. thats just silly.

maybe I'm optimstic. but I will never allow myself to be dragged down into lies and decay society places on people cause they are genetically inferrior. its like saying "you are not underweight so you must be unattractive"

who needs a society when they hammer you into the pegs they want you to be in and take away your dreams. I think its silly. and people can believe what ever they want to. not I. Any obsticle can be overcome.

Nonsense. She wasn't born with talent, she was born with a quick learning curve. Just look at her enormous progress over the years. She didn't just start blasting those paintings out of her ass as a 1 month old infant, she learned it - albeit faster then most.

You know, I always thought that was the definition of talent.

Let's see, right now I think I'm about as good as she was at age 7....and at age 4 she was better than most average adults.

I feel unaccomplished now.

That's really amazing, though! Wow!
Who are you calling a super-small bean you need a magnifying glass to see?!!!

This would be so much better if I updated it....which I did....but then I stopped again!

Talent, as traditionally defined, implies that a person is already proficient at a skill. Not that they happen to pick things up a bit more quickly in the course of practising to become proficient.

a fast learning curve is known as "aptitude" not talent. we've already been through this before a while back.

Young 'un's are running over us! They're progressing more rapid than older generations, and in one moment they will catch us, and eventually get much better than us! Just like with sex!

Bah; innocence is overrated.
Faith is what credulity becomes when it finally achieves escape velocity from the constraints of terrestrial discourse- reasonableness, internal coherence, civility, and candor. Thus, the men who commited the atrocities of September 11 were neither cowards nor lunatics of any sort, but Men of Faith- perfect faith- and this, it must finally be acknowleged, is a terrible thing to be.
