Tired of Comic Sans?

Post by IVstudios »

My Typography Prof. showed us this great websitewith tons of fonts to download. All for free! It's great for comic artists like me who got tired of using Comic Sans for their comics. Just be careful, a few of the fonts aren

T'be honest, for about two years now, I've been using Chasm (granted, I don't know what program it came with).

But there's also Blambot, 1001 Fonts, and probably any number of other sites out there to peruse. Blambot's nice because it's designed primarily for comic fonts, while 1001 Fonts has tons of fonts for free, far as I can tell.

Yeah I've been using http://www.fontfreak.com and that one has all the free tones Blambot offers and a bunch of other ones, I use Digital Strip for my font, but I think I want something a little more concise and definitely readable at 8pt.

On the other hand, while all of 1001's are free for use, not all are free for publishing. What's dafont's stand on that particular issue, anyhow?

I have a lot of trouble finding decent "comic" fonts because they're all stuck in SUPERHEROIC ALL CAPTITAL LETTERS mode. Ghastly passed along a trick for that from Hyung Kim, but it's simply easier to use Comic Sans... which is a much maligned font.

Like Duran Duran, one day it's loveliness will be appreciated.

The capital letters thing started out as a legibility issue, didn't it? I figure now, with so many fonts out there for a person to wander through, there's probably other ones out there. Chasm's been useful for me just beause while all the letters are in capital form, it still distinguishes between cases by size.

Yah, I don't like the fonts that use all caps of the same size, but I do like the ones that use large caps and small caps.

I must be an oddity, all my characters speech text is in Arial Unicode. I do write my news post in Comic Sans though.

Comic sans looks ugly. I use letter-o-matic or digital strip.

Same here. The only times I've resorted to hand-lettering for my comic is in instances where you're not really supposed to be able to read what's being said. Or for stuff in the background that doesn't really matter.

I started off using Comic Sans (still do use it for the site itself), but switched off to Myriad some time ago. It's a nice alternative to CS, I think. And Bold Italic Myriad works very well for people making (not-quite-over-the-top) exclamatory remarks.

My handwriting appears in my strip when I need a sound effect or alien writing. It works well.

I still hand-letter everything just 'cause I want everything online to look the same as it does on paper...especially if I photocopy it or something. My hand-lettering still isn't very good but I think I can say it IS getting better.

However, whenever I do digital lettering I use Pasteris which came from uh...Fontalicious, I think. Can't remember. It's real nice.

I wish I could hand-letter, but I couldn't write in a straight line if my life depended on it, and my comic is a cut-and-pase assembly sort of deal, so I don't think it would work too well, anyway. So, I use Anime Ace.

Actually, I prefere all caps. It's a kind of comic standard, probably because it is easier to read. Plus, handwritings are much less variable in all caps so there's no dilemma like "what this letter is?"
My handwriting is awfull but my notes from classes are quite readable. Why? Because, for comic purposes, I got used to writing in all caps so I rarely write other way.
I still look at using small letters (like in CRFH) a kind of exotic choice.

On the matter of fonts, I've been using Blambot's ACME from the beginning. It's very good and cartooney, although, admittedly, there was no other Blambot's font that suited me. All others are fonts for special purposes, like when robot or vampire is speaking, and I didn't have purpose for that effect.
Lately I've been using font based on my handwriting from Fontifier. Yes, it's poor quality, but it looks ok in Photoshop.

Comics San has to be handled carefully. It can work fine if you use it right, but take one step over the line and it turns hideously ugly. I use it for the human characters in my strip, and haven't found anything I'd really like to replace it with.

I used Comic Sans basically forever and was horribly disappointed to discover it was generally reviled...but bugger everybody else, I still use it in normal typing and on the site itself. However, I did end up finding Letter-o-Matic and after the first storyline change I shifted to that for dialogue. I still use Comic Sans from time to time for posters and displays on the walls in the strip and so forth.

Heh...my handwriting is...distinctive...and not too bad unless I write quickly, which I usually try to do anyway...but I'm really good writing on a blackboard...I won't do that now though...I'd get chalk on the inside of your monitors...

Times New Roman is the DEVIL and Comic Sans is merely one of its minions.

Seriously, though, Comic Sans is all right. It's perfectly fine for comics.. kind of like an almost-universal comic font (hence the name).
Meh. I hand-letter my comics so I know how much room the words will take up BEFORE I scan it.
Worked out so far.

Did Comics-sama forget to drop off Comics-san's Ritarin?
