Well, it was a just a theory on my part.

My only advice for you, William G, and I say this will all sincerity (sp?): Stop paying attention to politics. (I read your blog) Seriously, I get majorly depressed or pissed off just from listening to talk radio. I'm forced to listen cuz that's what they play at work. So I'm stuck, and I come home a grouch just from that, and nothing else. But I find that not listening or watching helps A TON. Either that, or watching the Daily Show creates a very satisfying buffer. All I want to be with tv or radio is entertained, not bothered, ya know?

Wow. Deriding people for acting superior ... and then generalizing a fanbase as being lock-stepping automatons. Where's Sortelli when we need him?

- and no, I'm not one of said "automatons." PA, for what qualities they do possess, are a bit more crude than I like.

It's all good now, peeps. Please don't mention the PA thingy here.

I give mad props to Liriel for doing her absolute best to control the huge egos on BcX, and there are a lot of people there that I like and admire, but it really sucks for what the other ones make it be. And Gabe just made the place a lot worse now. I still need to thank him for that.

We're luck to be among friends and civil people, so let's do our best to keep it this way, aight?

Boy, I hate it when this happens to a theread :-? . It's interesting for a while, but it always seems to end in grumbling and glaring at people.

Hehe, I live in a land where politics is impossible to ignore, since they're affecting everyday life a bit too much. Luckily, it's also sometimes, brought to apsurd, clumsy or overall stupid, so one can get a good laugh out of it.

I was lurking there and, yeah, I wouldn't be in Liriel's skin.

One funny thing about the repetition of this accusation is that I dont recall doing that in this thread.
and then generalizing a fanbase as being lock-stepping automatons.
Cartoonist tells you that someone is a big bad person. Then they give you the means to track them down and harrass them. Then a good chunk of the fanbase goes and does so.

"Lock-stepping automaton" is probably the nicest thing I can say about them given those facts.

Huge egos? Must be talking about that Chugworth guy... ;)

But yeah, Liriel, she's a smart cookie.

It seems my use of the word "deriding" led you off on some wild semantic tangent so as to prevent you from having to consider what anyone actually said and possibly admit to something. If so, then it's not worth the bother of dancing on eggshells to appease you.

And what, exactly, do you call "a good chunk?" Looking over the thread, there were 14, 15 pages of replies. If each of those had come from a separate person, that would still be what, 225-300 people. If that were coming from, say, NeTrek's fanbase, then yes, that would be "a good chunk" (and probably more people than actually /read/ NeTrek, which would be quite a feat - but I digress). But with something like PA, with a fanbase in the thousands, if not the tens of thousands, that's barely the lunatic fringe and possibly some of the more dedicated fans.

I'd almost be curious to see what would happen if you directed your readers toward a thread that insulted something you did; maybe we'd see what a real "good chunk" would look like, or maybe you'd get the same proportion doing something.

I'm starting to understand why the Greeks prohibited their youth from studying philosophy until they were 40.

I'm just quoting my history of psych prof. Over the past few weeks, he's kept making jokes about 40 being some magic age when psychologists really flourish and stuff.

No offense taken. I've seen my comics from 2000, and *yich*. You should see the stuff people were doing the year before.

Anyway, Willie, I was merely engaging an intellectual discussion about comics. I apologize if my tone suggested otherwise.

It may be my bias because I consider Bill a friend, but I'm yet to see him using his webspace to badmouth other webcartoonists (with maybe the exception of the last post on his blog, which is merely a reply to what Gabe did).

The day he does that is the day I lose all my respect for him. I have a great distaste for people who use their comics to pick up fights with other cartoonists.

Maybe it was a small portion of PA's fanbase that went there to call him names, but there was one nonetheless. And still Bill kept a rather polite tone over it. There's no excuse to what Gabe did, because there is no way he couldn't have predicted something like that wouldn't happen. And all because Bill made the horrible mistake of having an opinion.

If anyone ever does something stupid in my name or my comic's, I can safely say that person is no longer welcome to read it. It's a shame that Gabe doesn't seem to think this way. In fact, he seems to even promote this kind of attitude.

Which is, in a lack of a better word, just sad.

Heh, check one of my posts, I said the same using exactly the same quotes. The fact that he didn't answer to any of my posts speaks enough for itself.
Lup, it's no point bothering anymore. At this point I've lost any respect in him, he either knows that he's wrong but has no balls to admitt and apologuise, or he is so stuck up in his own little world that he doesn't listen to reason any more than those people who claim that earth is flat. All he can do now is repeating something that he thinks are facts, hoping that if it's repeated enough times, it will became true. There are enough good people in this world to be friends with, why bother with other ones?

Eh ... mistakes were made on all sides, I think, even (if not especially) on my own part. I shouldn't have gotten my dander up so much about one guy who gets his jollies by glibly insulting other people and watching the imbroglio that results. I don't have a problem with people having opinions; it's just the expressions of them that sometimes get on my nerves (it's like the difference between me saying that I don't like football and me calling football fans a bunch of brainless ghits).

So, in the interest of getting Bekka riled up ...

*hugs and makes up with whoever's willing*
Unless it's MercuryHat, in which case, it's hugs and makes out. :P

My goodness, how high is your horse?

You and Luprand are like two woodpeckers, endlessly nailing away, determined to get exactly what you want. And you have the balls to accuse me of being an obnoxious prick?

Think about this very, very carefully: The more you call me an asshole, the more likely that I'll be an asshole in response to it. Is does seem to be a pretty reasonable result when you think of it, doesnt it?

But what's really sad, is how you and Lurprand have been every bit as obnoxious, and determined to prove the other guy is wrong as you've accused me of being. It seems pretty childish to say this, but "Pot to kettle, you're black"

Now, somehow I doubt that you'll be willing to admit that both of you have made something into more than it really was. And quite honestly, I dont see why I have to justify every passing line to two complete strangers. So I dont plan to.

Take a lesson from Pin. He actually asked me, "Gee Bill, you've been pretty combative lately. Is anything wrong?" and he got a response from me. Whereas you two have decided that it was "time to slay the dragon" and came out riding like two great messageboard templars and passed your judgement upon me. You could have done it in PM, but then no one would know what decent folks you two are, right?

So I think it's time to end your crusading grandstanding boys. Everyone who is going to be impressed with you probably already has been. And if your respect for me is soley determined by how much I agree with your opinions about me, then I dont really want it.

Now, I'm willing to let this drop... like I've been trying to. What about you? I mean, seriously. Not the "I'll make some snide comments to cement my feelings of superiority while I mercifully let Bill off the hook." version of lettin it drop that you guys seem to subscribe two. But the real thing.

Okay. I've stopped, and am done.

There.

Meanwhile, on a different tack entirely, darn my throat is sore. Karaoke night wasn't anywhere near as crowded as I thought it would be, so I had a blast wearing my voice out. It was great.
