Comics as part of your identity
As one or two of you probably know, my comic's been down for about a month, right in the middle of the occasional storyline. You know, even though I didn't really want to do it (not that I could at that time), doesn't it feel like you're just not as creative? Like you've lost part of your identity? Strange, considering I never thought too highly of my comic in the first place.
Anyone else feel the same way?

I just feel like I'm repeating the same jokes in mcDuffies all over again. Luckily, it relies on stories so much, and in that department I'm actually getting better.
But as I see, it happens to a lot of comics. Lots of popular comics. It's sad to see one of your fave comic kind of spent out, with no intention to go toward the less known paths... I don't think I'm the only one who ever felt this way.

Seems to me like I've always gotta be drawing a comic of some kind. I finished the second issue of These Days a few weeks ago and for days afterward I was completely devoid of inspiration for drawing anything but comic pages. (As it is, I still haven't started the third issue because we haven't finalised the script yet....) So, sometimes all I feel like drawing is comic pages, which I guess is okay considering I feel that some of my best drawings come from those pages... :b
That reminds me...
Sometimes I just can't draw my comic. I'll be drawing my characters and they'll look all weird and stuff, and I'll start to panic and think I've lost all my drawing skills. Then it's usually back the next day.
Sometimes I feel like I'm losing my writing skills to. "Uh oh, I'm not cynical enough. I should watch 'Ghost World' again."
Of course, when it comes to writing I have a huge 5 subject notebook I fill with any random idea I get during the day, which usually helps.

i find taking more than a week away from the drawing board or writing table leaves me feeling a bit out of sorts...

My comic has become a bit split these days, almost like there are two different strips going on. One is very non canon, very 'wtf'...this can be me(no tmy character) going to the grocery store or a club, or just strange one shots...and then the other is a not very well thought out storyline Im trying to end...all so I can finally get going on a true storyline and newer style I hope to debut soon. *whew* I am well known for missing updates...tho somehow I usually have 2-3 strips a week.

I'm kinda lucky for the fact that I have two creative endeavors, my comic and my radio show. So even though right now I haven't drawn a comic for 2 weeks, I'm still able to do something "creative" in planning my show's playlist, working on it's website and promoting it as well (not that I'm really trying to plug it now...). But I was writing little snippets for my comic this weekend and after reading through my archive I was inspired to start writing new comics this week that I can start doing for October. So now I get to kind of flip-flop between two creative outlets.
Too bad you can't update your comic as much, I've really been enjoying it the times it does update.

The comic has become a huge chunk of my thoughts. I used to panic if I didn't have anything to read when I was on a train, now I just leave the book in the handbag because I am thinking about future strips. What's worse, I think about them even when people are talking to me and my interest drops a bit.

I do that too. I'm two storylines ahead on mcDuffies, one issue ahead on LWK. Currently I'm idle and slowly finishing scripts for next episodes.SuperSnob wrote:Seems to me like I've always gotta be drawing a comic of some kind. Seconded! I'm only just getting into a schedule of acually doing a page every week, but I'm already becoming addicted to it.TOXIC AVENGER! wrote: Sometimes I just can't draw my comic. I'm just recovering from a long rut where I missed updating for a month at a time. It was a difficult episode of my life professionally speaking. Like supernerdcore, I have other avenues to vent my creativity so I didn't feel I was incomplete of sorts.
But I do keep thinking about my comic's story all the time. Luckily, my GF is just as crazy as I am and she helps me vent a lot (she cowrites with me the prose side stories based my comic's secondary characters).
