Fight cancer/disease in the name of webcomics! I'm SERIOUS.

What am I blabbing about now, you ask?

Why, a cancer-fightin' team for those who love webcomics.

I belong to another message board community that got involved in this, and it's been a success. We'd do this in teams, actually - there can be a website just for our webcomic-team, and even a logo. I'm thinking some collaboration on a team logo could be fun if anyone's interested.

Here's a link to the brand-spankin' new webcomic-cancer-fighting-team! Below is a pretty good description of what it's all about:
cheese master wrote:This is one of those shared computing things. Bunches of different people download the client and use their idle CPU processes to compute small parts of the huge amount of data. It's much more cost-effective than attempting to process data with a supercomputer.

Don't worry, it shouldn't slow down your computer, because any program you want to run will get a higher cpu priority (except for perhaps another program like it). It will just use your idle processes that would otherwise go wasted and put them to good use.

The computational research being done involves trying out a bunch of proteins to see how they react with certain other proteins. Successful ones could go on to become new drugs that would greatly help the fight against cancer. I'm sure many of you here know someone who has been affected by it.
So spread the word, everyone! And do mention if you're interested in the logo/website dealie.

Sound a lot like SETI@Home, but with a much more practical purpose. Sure, I'm in. What the heck, I have a machine at work that sits idle all night. I can help cure cancer in my sleep!

Actually, Soap, I thought at first you were wanting us to use our characters to shill donations for a cancer research institute or something, which wouldn't be an entirely bad idea, so long as we find the right place. Hmmm... got to think about that one.

Yaaaay! I'm glad there's at least some interest. To help, just tell your friends, readers, estranged cousins, lovers, pets...and of course, download it yourself! :D

Edit: Oops, I posted right after Cortland did - didn't see his post.

That's one heck of a thought. Now, we would have to get a LOT of artists in on that to put a dent for donations, but that's probably more admirable an idea than this program. I think it may be a little more involved than some of us have time for *cough cough*haven'tupdatedinamonth*cough*, but I think that's a great idea.

Got it up and running...

This won't cause any detriment to the CPU, will it? I mean, with it running at 100% capacity constantly?

It will get a lot hotter than it normally does, if your computer is one of the newer processors but only has a bog standard AMD/Intel supplied heatsink then I advise caution. It will get very hot. Mine's currently running at 56 degrees C.

Thank you so much, Zhan/Faded/War! I was worried this topic would drop like a brick (and it sort of did anyway, but hey  ).

The Webcomic team now has three members (I'm not sure if that's including myself or not), putting us at rank # 11,682 of all the teams (though a LOT of teams have only one member). With all the rankings it's sort of a "competition" -- but a friendly one, of course.

We've also racked up a few hundred points. It says on the page, "points can represent the amount of charitable donations we make on behalf of Members." So...hurrah! I've heard there have been contests before too, with some prizes.

Every little bit helps, in this case. Even if you don't join the Webcomic team, it'd just be great if you helped.

Noble thing. I'll see what I can do.

We now have 4 members, thanks to Jamie. This knocks us up to rank # 9,078 (doesn't take much...>_>).

Anything you can do would be awesome, McDuffies!

Still 4 members...

You'd think people would be a bit more eager to lend a hand for such a worthy cause :-?

Water cooling didn't pan out for you did it?

Anyway, make sure your RAM is stable, otherwise you might be sending them bad data. That's the primary reason I'm not doing this right now.

It's okay, WP. I don't want to guilt trip anyone about not being involved, especially if their reasons are beyond their control.

Aside from that, all the participation in this has been awesome. We've got 5 members now (and for those who care, it puts us at rank # 7,357). We've also made 1,648 points, and completed 14 tasks. Keep it up!

As I'm currently winning on points generated, I'll do fanart for anyone who overtakes me :D.

Huh...

I just realized I wasn't included into the team for some reason :-?

EDIT: Okay, rectified, but... my already accumulated points aren't added to the teams as well I see :/

That's a shame, cause I've got 742 ;D

Thank god I'm currenly on 1053 :D.

I'm pretty sure they will be -- it just takes 24 hours to update points accumulated, I believe. If not, it's okay!

You have a lot of points. It says on the site that War has 587. UH OH, FANART TIME

...Unless the site just hasn't updated with War's latest points...

[Edit] *reads War's post* ...Well dang.

Oh, I was going by what the site was telling me

According to the actual program I've got 1136 ;v
