Bandwidth is easily found for 10 cents a gigabyte or less now adays. In a couple of years servers charging for bandwidth are probably only going to charge by the terabyte because bandwidth will be too cheap to meter by the gigabyte. Most likely bandwidth won't even be metered in the future and hosting will be charged by how much storage you want not how much bandwidth you use because as bandwidth becomes cheaper and faster online companies are going to be pushing more content down the pipe and will thus need more storage space to hold it. Webcomics Nation is already moving to that model of hosting. Unmetered bandwidth and market specific automations are what they're using to attract subscribers. You'll probably see a lot more of that in the future. Servers being priced based on tools and storage, and unmetered bandwidth being the draw.

I don't agree with Scott going after Tauhid either, but I know, and you know perfectly well it wasn't just because of the colour blue, please don't try and make it sound like it was.

Apparently, Scott Kurtz has a monopoly on blue mythological creatures. Whatever. I respect the man's work more then the man himself.

An average rate for bandwidth is currently 5-10 dollars per GB. Hosting is not free.

Yeah, Scott was exaggerating bandwidth prices a bit in his article. Around the time it was written bandwidth would have been about $2 to $5 per gigabyte. A few years earlier and it would have been $5-$10 per gigabyte.

When I had my first webpage bandwidth was $40 per gigabyte, needless to say popularity could have really killed you then. Of course there wern't as many people online back then.

Luckily my website was hosted by the Hamilton Wentworth Community net so hosting was only $25 a year and bandwidth wasn't metered. Of course I only had a whopping 1 megabyte of storage.

Woohoo! 1 MEGABYTE!

The sad part was I didn't even fill it....

... and my e-mail shared that megabyte.

Any idea when the Webcomic Nation thing should kick in, aside from the hype? It sounds really interesting. Would they be able to provide automated management tools like Keenspace?

It does sound quite curious, doesn't it?

No idea about the Webcomics Nation thing. Joey is being tight lipped about it so as not to get people's hopes up for a deadline and then have something go wrong. All I've gotten is that it is sooner rather than later.

I know I'm chomping at the bit for this.

The one thing about moving out of keenspace, whether it's for this upcoming webcomic nation, or greener pastures (as in dollar-green) - just to stay in topic with the topic... Well, I think that the community here is so cool and lively and ultimately supportive, that it would be a shame to lose that. I really like the 'space crowd. How did it work for those of you who went indie, or moved to 'spot or GS or (insert name here)? Did you still keep in touch with the old crowd as you did before?

And I can safely tell you it's the Keenspace community that are the reason I'm still here doing Help for Keenspace.

To be honest, I still think this is still the most fun forum to be around. TAC is too big, Comixpedia is kinda quiet, and well...

That's why I'm back on keenspace. I got tired of a few of the jerks on TAC (they're easier to deal with the less I see of them) and on comixpedia the regulars are all too nice and smart for much else than a few opinions, then a lot of "I agree with everyone else". Of course, I have fingers in a lot of online pies, because I remain adamant in my idea that where you are hosted means very little. We're ALL indie.

Webcomicsnation, from what I keep hearing, is going to be awesome because Joey's making and testing all the changes with MT and the family of sites first. Like MT, you won't have the ability to cutomize your pages to the extent you can elsewhere, but you will have a variety of ways to auto-update your comic. You can sell stuff at the swapmeet. And you will have easy tools for making your comic for pay, like with bitpass. Or you could just make extras, like things you'd offer up for donation, for 25 cents.

And about the Kurtz thing - The whole situation is between the two guys and it hasn't been the one blue fairy incident. Kurtz reacted based on a history between the two. Who knows if it was warranted or would hold up in court, because the spells and whistles fellow made the changes and everyone is happy now, except people who hate Kurtz.

I've actually seen a lot of people who went indie and left forum at the same time (it doesn't have to be a rule, you see lots of people who don't have ks comics at all here). Though, forum was a lot quieter back then, well, it was never particulary quiet but nowadays it's a kind of Boom. Some of people actually got back after a while, like Psiogen did.

Of course, I don't know if Kurtz dislikes waffles, and even if he did, that still doesn't mean he's instantly a good man, because that was an implication, not the equivalence, so I guess we won't solve this problems with waffles, eh?

There are days when French Toast is the way to go. Egg on bread with sticky sugar substance is just good all around.

Those cinamon donuts are the best for breakfast, really. I mean, I'm having beef jerky for breakfast today and it's just not the same.
