---Sometimes, you just have to keep going after Keenspot, also. I submitted PCC three times (over two years) before it was finally picked up...ironically, I still haven't signed the contract because I haven't been able to find a lawyer cheap enough to comb through the legalese.

---PA, from what I recall, used to bring in almost $5000 a month, and that was when they were still just taking donations.

So why have you submitted three times? I saw you had a pretty slick website, and you've purchased your domain (and probably webspace too.)

Aside from possibly a few bucks in your pocket, why would you want to be Spotted?

I'm not trying to be smart, I'm being legit here.

5k a month? For making half-ass gaming comics that makes no sense?

Damn.

PS: I'm not trying to totally rat on PA. Sometimes, like once a month, they put the funniest thing ever. Most of the strips aren't very funny and I consider myself hardcore gamer.

That's because the strips are a very small part of their site. My understanding is that they do game reviews and the strips are related directly to the reviews, hence they don't make sense unless you read the 4 page rant.

---Well, the first two times I submitted I'd not heard anything back, so I assumed I was just declined. Could be we just slipped through the cracks, but I wasn't about to let up.

---It's not about the money at all, but frankly, my exposure is poor. I'm sitting on the same readerbase as i was two years ago, which is about 2000 uniques a day. After almost five years, I would've expected to be much further along. I also believe Keenspot may have the resources available to help me make the push into film/TV, which from the start was always my ultimate goal.

---I've always gotten on well with Gabe and Tycho and have the utmost respect for what they've managed. I really don't have time to read online comics anymore, but even so, I still didn't get 90% of the comics they'd drawn up when I did. I guess I missed the humor boat somewhere along the way, I imagine, but the artwork remains as sharp as always.

Eh, more like they don't make sense unless you read first the 4 lines. Thats all I do.

Hooray for explaining a 'joke' and shitty writing.

Scott Kurtz, even though he is an arrogant prick for suing people using the color blue, is funny as hell. His City of Heroes arc was something that anyone can laugh about even if you don't know the game well.

Legalese? I've read the contract, it's very cut and dried. And it's not something I'd worry about (enough to get a lawyer) because it's relatively easy to cut out of keenspot without loosing anything you brought in or did while under their banner.

If you're still worried, go hang out in chatrooms for law students or something where people know more about it and won't be so professional as to charge $200/hour for reading a very short contract and deciding if it's going to cheat you out of anything.

Also, I dearly love Penny Arcade and have since 1999! And I only play PS2 RPGs!! I don't mind having to read Tycho's rants to understand the comic, because he's an excellent writer most of the time.

---I don't think Keenspot's looking to cheat anyone out of anything, but there's some provisions that I feel need to be added should anything happen to Keenspot that's outside their control (ie, a hostile takeover).

Hmm, when signing up a contract for GS, all I did was take the contract to one friend who is a law student and let him reread it.
So why have you submitted three times? I saw you had a pretty slick website, and you've purchased your domain (and probably webspace too.)

Warren is well known for stopping reading a comic as soon as it's spotted.
That's because the strips are a very small part of their site. My understanding is that they do game reviews and the strips are related directly to the reviews, hence they don't make sense unless you read the 4 page rant.
So, basically, "this site is very good. But this comic sucks"?

But there's a lot of ways to advance your readership apart from Keenspot. I mean, every time I'd draw fanart for someone, my visits would jump at least a bit.

Now, now... I sometimes tiptoe through the 'Spot. I just read so few comics in general because it takes too damn long.

He is an arrogant prick. While I'm arrogant and think I'm a possible candidate for God's next son, I won't be going around suing people left and right because of a certain color.

I mean, if someone does take a storyline or character concept from my comic, I'll be pissed. But because something is the color of one my characters, that I'm doing to sue? Ugh, no.

He also told future webcartoonists a that they shouldn't try because they won't be able to keep up with bandwidth or whatever. Just look at his "Can success kill your webcomic" articles. That is a sign of arrogance.

I'm not suprised that he is well-known and is a success. I like his comics, the artwork suites the humorous theme, and his observation is great. Anyone who can make joke about staring at an ass all day in CoH gets TEH FUNNEH award. But he needs to lay-off the ego trip. He is good, but not the best thing since sliced bread.

Didn't we have this discussion already? First Van Douchebag, then Pockybot, now BloodKnight.

A privately held company cannot be taken over in a hostile takeover. Even a public company cannot be taken over in a hostil takeover provided one person who does not wish the takeover to take place holds more than 50% of the stock.

The only way Keen could have a hostile takeover would be if some mafia guys came up to Chris and Gav with guns and said "Yous guys is gonna give us your company now."

The Keenspace's bi-line would be "Keenspace: Minds your own business and nobody gets whacked."

---Probably. I'm not going out of my way to look for problems, but at the same time I don't want something devastating to happen to what essentially ends up being my life's work because of some sort of slipped-through-the-cracks oversight. I'm just not in that much of a rush.

You know, all this hearsay gets really old after a while.

I don't agree with Scott going after Tauhid either, but I know, and you know perfectly well it wasn't just because of the colour blue, please don't try and make it sound like it was.

Also, you know perfectly well the 'screw-you don't try' message was never even said by Scott Kurtz and is merely your own interpretation on the message in his article. I'm not sure if you realise it, but you've just been putting your words in the mouths of other people

Blood Knight, you have the right to state your opinions, but do at least try and not mislead people in your statements.

Just link to the relevant articles and let people decide for themselves.

As intelligent human beings, people are perfectly capable of making their own judgements, thank you very much.

FYI, the relevant articles:

Could Success Soon Kill Your Webcomic?

The Keenspot thread that Van Douchebag started. I couldn't find the original threads again. I doubt if they still exist still. I should ask Van where they are, I guess he knows.

As a previously stated, you have a right to your opinions. But for the love of whatever you hold dear, do at least try and be fair when you voice those opinions.

"A statement, regardless of whether it is true or not, becomes accepted as a fact because it is repeated often enough."

Bah.
