My art teacher got Burt Monroy to guest lecture my class this week. For those of you unfamiliar with him, he is probably one of the best people with photoshop in the world, has written several photoshop books, and he even helps Adobe design new versions. He can practically make any image of the top of his head. I was in a state of awe watching him work. I just thought I'd share that.
Wow that site has some very useful stuff on it like the Design buddy article, I was thinking of falling back on the slightly more stable Design business too, Thanks for posting it. He does have some very amazing work, I haven't met anyone that I'd really care about so far, most of them were Fine Artists and I wasn't very interested in their work.
I think money should not even be in the picture. The government offers loans. Anyway, I don't think the school someone goes to makes any difference other than image-wise. "You went to Berkeley? Wow!"
I know what that's like. I got accepted into Sahvanna College of Art and Design, but it's way more that I or my parents could afford. Ended up going to the local univeristy and then dropping out due to B.S. stuff that went down. But truely, if it's a good school, why would your parents say no? unless it was due to money like mine was.

Well wait. What school do you go to if you don't mind me asking?
I just graduated from HS today, going to San Jose State this fall. I like SFSU better, it's more art oriented. My parents base their opinions of how good a college is based on how expensive or prestigious it is. I wanted to apply to Cal Arts, but my dad said "That's a horrible school! You can't go there!" and he doesn't even know anything about it.
Well I go to the Art Institute over on market street. I don't wanna seem like a walking billboard but depending on what you want to do you might want to check this out. They have various different programs: Animation, Video Game design yadda yadda yadda. Only catch is that it's really expensive (how do you think I wound up in the military?).
The Fan: Action, Drama, Suspence...All at a comfortable room temperature. Yeah, it's still there. I'm as shocked as you are.

Note to self: Never listen to parents.
so wait.
They're making you go to SJS because SFSU wasn't expensive enough?

Because it wasn't pretigious enough (ie lower acceptance rate and about a 10 point higher SAT average).

Art Institute....? Wait, is that Academy of Art College? They're great. One of my friends was trying to recruit me there.

No, this is the Art Institute of San Francisco. You should check it out just incase. It's on Market and 7th by the civic center. I don't know if you're parents will approve or whatever but it's your life and worth a look. The thing I like about it apart from the Academy is that it's smaller so the teachers get to know you on a more personal level which makes the experience a lot more....helpful(?.....I need a frickin' thesarus!).

I've been through art school, and, as such, I'd advise a few things:
1) Never rack up a debt to go there. It's not law school. Even if you make it into the profession, it's hard to make significant money (depending on your field). I know people who are over 50k in debt from art school. That debt isn't going ANYWHERE. Paying for college just isn't something art students do.
2) I would be wary of the "Art Institute" schools. I'm not saying they're bad, per se, but they're kind of like the McDonalds of art schools. They're a chain. A big chain. That, to me, does not inspire faith in them as an institution, but judge for yourself.
3) Learn to handle criticism. It's coming. And it's not always nice.
So there's my advice. Oh, and one other thing-- art education sucks a lot more than you think it will.
