Changes

Post by McDuffies »

How much did your comic change since you started it?
What changes are due to your better skills, what are due to your decisions to turn to different direction, and what are product of a sort of evolution of comic?

When you see your first pages, do you:
a) wish to burn them
b) Say: euuugh, and leave a message for readers that 'first comics are crude but later gets better'
c) shrug your sholders and nostalgicaly smile: well it's all part of growing up
d) say: They're no different from latest.

Do you plan and changes soon? Are you satisfied with what your comic is now?

Discuss.

B!

Most of the changes are just changes in art, as it is with most webcomics. And, no, we don't plan on changing anything ('plan' being the key word there. Whatever changes come, come [Michelle does wish she could draw better, though... - -;;;])

You be the judge: we start with this, and now it's more like this. Why the change? I like the sketchy look, it feels like the art has more depth, and it doesn't look nearly as stiff as the "clean" lines did. As for whether or not it'll change more...well, who can say? My abilities, meager as they are, are improving (I think they are, anyway), and there's always the chance that my style will change as things move along.

Trust me, even the early ones, where I don't like the art as much, are better than the comic was before I moved to keenspace. Everyday, in every way, we are getting better and better.

My problem is like 8 out of the 1st 10 comics I did aren't even kinda funny. Mainly I didn't know how to write a punchline. So although I had some creative ideas they ended up being to random and confusing.

I think the first comics you post your mindset is that of a the cavemen who originally dug webcomics from the earth with their bare hands. You're having so much fun that you don't care if you suck or not. It's new and exciting. Eventually you start getting involved more and you see other peoples' comics. I'm not saying you necessarily steal ideas from others, but their work inspires you to push harder.
Even if you didn't ever read another webcomic you would improve just by repetition and practice alone.

I am not exactly proud of my earlier comics, but I accept that it's all part of a larger process. Yeah, my first strip is kind of embarassing to me now. But one day I'll be looking back on this week's strips and I'll say "my lord...what was I thinking?!" Evolution, baby!

I wish I look at the comics I'm doing now when they are up on my site six months from now and see how much I imrpoved.

I already look ate the strips that are on my page now (even the most recent ones) and sense how much they suck.

Since I started, NeTrek has started being inked ... colored ... computer-texted on most days ... better-drawn ... and about 7 times as scarce.

I completely re-did all my early strips when I moved my strip to Keenspace; they were that bad. As I plowed through my archives, I started re-posting old stuff as it started getting better. Even now, months in, I still haven't quite finished cleaning out the archives; often from day to day a visitor to my strip can see how much my work has changed/improved, even from last year. One of these weeks, though, it will be All New and Improved...

Well...I don't have my first comics in any digital form, so I can't display them. But the first I ever put on the internet was completely, completely different from the first comic I put up on keenspace. The reason being that I do not own a scanner, so when I decided to update regularly and with more serious strips, I had to stop scribbling with a .7 click-click pencil on lined paper and start scribbling with a swish-swish mouse in an Illustrator document.

And after that I haven't really improved, except that I now put more time into making the panels a bit more detailed. My art teacher was always nagging me about that in 8th grade... "Don't have plain white backgrounds everywhere!!! At least draw a horion!" :)

Edit: on second thoughts, I have at least improved at making those bubbles. What are they aclled again? Speech bubbles?

Also, the text in old comic 1 is "90% of all accidents happen in the household". And no, that's not the F-word you're reading in old comic 2, it says "HACK".

By the way, my first picture is the second ever picture of myself. Note that even then I had my dreaded bat of hittingness. I refuse to scan the first one because it's so bad. The second one is the first incarnation of the current design I use for War in the battle royale threads and is what Digital War is ultimately headed for.

i'd say i've improved a bit from day 1... i'm happier with may panel layout and lettering and a think i've got a better sense of anatomy and backgrounds these days... would like to improve my colouring a lot more though.

It's hard for me to say I've "improved" any since my first comic. Every day can either be something I'm proud of, or a total crap-fest. But the way I've drawn the characters hasn't really changed, though I am trying to make a conscious effort to draw with a little more consistency, with an attempt at reasonable anatomical-correctness.

Alright, so I'm recycling the chart I made last summer. It still serves its point really well.

The artwork overall in mine has improved a lot, in general, though I still think the first strip is one of the best one's I've ever done.

One the reasons I started my comic was to improve my drawing skills. I started with crude pencil drawings, started to colorize after finding out how to draw noses and now I

I think I've improved a bit since I started putting comics online...

First one
Recent one I'm relatively happy with

I don't know how much my drawing is improving, but I'm getting more comfortable with the pen and ink. At least there's been less "oops" for me to clean up on the computer now, and less ink to wash off my hands when I'm done. :)

I was going through some rough strips from a couple years ago, and found a strip that was pretty close to finished - it was interesting seeing the different look of some of the characters, the different look of the station and the planets around it, and a character who isn't in the current version of the strip. So I put it up as a voting bonus strip. :)
