Full Metal Panic!!
It's probably because most anime just really sucks.Seriocity wrote:I can't stand watching most anime for some reason. I'm not sure if it's because of the eyes or the plots.

Shows like Beyblade, DBZ, Pokemon and the like are an insult to the name anime. It is shows like that perpetuate myths of bug eyes, re-used still frames, tentacle rape, and anime sex kittens.
Not that those things are intrinsically bad, but it is they who sully the name of good Japanese Animation, and for them, they are damned to forever burn in the hells of bad critiques.
Making a snap decision against the fan service filled cartoons of Japan, is like judging the entirety of western film by fucking Muppets From Space. A pox on those foul wretched abominations, for they are the shame of animators everywhere!

I think I saw a bit of it at GenCon once...but not much. I would like to see more sometime, even though I'm generally not into mech based animes (save Escaflowne).
Anime is as mixed a bag as anything else...but yeah, really opressivly hard core otaku can ruin just about any of it for someone. Very sad.
Still, I find I like a lot more anime than I do American shows. Not because it's inherently superior or anything...there's just a larger basis of what I like. Comedic fantasy, near future sci fi, epic tales, etc. Not to mention some of the more original, bizarre series.
Most especially, there will always be a place in my heart for Trigun, Cowboy Bebop, and Read or Die.
*edit and reply- I sort of think tentical rape, being, you know, rape, is definately intrensically bad.

Yea, same here. I remember a few weeks ago, someone said my manga style was reminiscent of Love Hina - something I had never seen. When I said, "what's Love Hina?", they went "WHAT!? YOU TRAITOR!"Matt Lim wrote:I stoppped watching anime for a while now. Otakus ruined the experience for me.
Traitor? What, so I like the style of anime and like two shows, thus I must adore every crappy show that comes along? Not that anime is crappy, but some of those shows... *shudder*
He's right. Japan has so much more to offer. Like Godzilla movies. That's quality!TheGoobla wrote:Making a snap decision against the fan service filled cartoons of Japan, is like judging the entirety of western film by fucking Muppets From Space.

I... I liked Spirited Away. And I'm a hard arsed critic when it comes to movies (or most things for that matter) so it's gotta' be somewhat good!Patachu wrote:Everyone else is right though. And I wanted to see Spirited Away; and now I really want to see it.
I want to see this 'Full Metal Panic' too.
That makes me think of Trigun... I like Trigun; I hate that Cartoon Network isn't showing it right now, damn it; I could be sitting here watching it on the computer, right now!
Note: I was looking through the cast page of that Full Metal movie, and there is a person whose last name is 'Testarossa'; and she has white hair.
(For you non-Italians or Ferrari fans, Testarossa means 'red head'.)

Vincent D'Onofrio. And he's probably Italian American.
I'm surprised at your blanket hatred of anime, Vile. As far as I know, anime is animation from Japan, though it's a French word. Lazy animation techniques, recycled story lines and themes, stiff and robotic movements, tentacle monsters and giant robots are common in anime, but it doesn't define it. Sure, look at Pokemon and the lower quality Trigun episodes, you'll find a lot of obvious cheating. But you look at Cowboy Bebop or FLCL or anything by Miyazaki, and you'll see there's always something going on. Often Miyazaki will throw in little details that require about three hundred extra drawings just for flavor. Of course a lot of it's going to suck: They watch cartoons over there almost like Americans watch sitcoms. Now let's all compare anime to sitcoms for a second. If Friends is top shelf....
Sorry to get so animated (smacks self in forehead). I'm not even that into anime. But some is truly great. Spirited Away might be the best thing I've ever seen. Just because Creed sucks I'm not gonna throw in the towel on rock music before listening to the Clash.

I own "Spirited Away", also a couple other titles, and used to have all kinds of stuff that's been either stolen or lost when moving.
I used to watch "Gigantor" on TV as a kid. It was a black and white cartoon. Now I realize how weird that is. Also used to watch "Marine Boy" (as in water, not the military) as another black and white Japanese cartoon.
Like anything else, some anime is great, some is crap.
Drawing good anime must take a phenomenal amount of hard work to build the skills. Pretty sure It would take me ten years to get close, so I won't.

It seems that my last remark can be read as scathing sarcasm against the genre of anime.
I know that good Japanese anime is made by people who first take art school, draw still-lifes, landscapes, nudes, and learn all kinds of technique. When they get out into the business sector, they can then learn to tranlate those skills into extremely high quality and consistancy of line, while drawing stylized characters. The stylization known to us as "anime".
The honing of a common adopted style also helps to get work, when you belong to a team of animators that must all draw alike for the sake of consistancy.
Some shoehorn their way into the biz by being self-taught, and being gifted with a natural talent to draw. They still have to hone their skills and draw like prodigies before getting on an animation team. In the end, it isn't all about your porfolio. People like to know you can stick with a program (school, work) and work well in a team.
The style of "anime" requires more skill than it appears to. That's what I meant. I don't have the skill, so I won't touch it.
It's not necessary to PM me about it. My previous post was not clear is all. I'm not a person to unleash sarcasm here. If it can read two ways, give me the benefit of the doubt. I usually try to "tag" my angry opinionated posts with tell-tale road signs such as the use of expletives.
As a mock example: "Anime that isn't from Japan sucks royal ass, regardless of the concept of homage, and only makes me appreciate the real thing even more."
A mock example, remember.
