Well folks, I just got a comlaint about this topic. After a scan through, I've found out that it's a spam.

Thus, it's been malleted. *KERCLANK!*

Kent B. is now a brig resident and will not be able to post until he contacts help (at) keenspace.com with an explination to why he evoked Godwin's Law in the first place.

... just curious, but does this still need to be a sticky thread, two years later?

Godwin's Law: the longer an argument continues on line, the more likely it is that someone will invoke a comparison to Hitler.

Correlary: When that happens, that person can be counted as having lost the argument.

...But his quote is grossly missinterpreted. Actual quote was nowhere near "90% of everything is crap" and not nearly that nychilistic. It was more something along the lines of: "It's true that 90% of science fiction is crao, but so is 90% of everything" which is a defend of SF from people who thought that SF is predestined to be pulp literature with no value whatsoever.

On the other hand, I've often seen it applied to music, for example when people complain that music now isn't as good as it was in, say, the '60s. After all, there was probably just as high a proportion of rubbish music in the '60s (my dad confirms this), but the bad stuff is filtered out over time...

Oh, it's definitely true. If you take any artistic medium in and time period, the "90%" rule is very applicable. It's just that the formulation people use most often sounds too hateful.
