Cartooning Influences?

Post by ZOMBIE USER 3098 »

I'd just like to ask y'all a question:

Which cartoonist inspired the art of your comics (or what situation)?

Also, which one inspired your storyline, humor, plot, etc...?

For me, I think my art was somewhat influenced by reading the Mortimer and Blake comics as well as some mix of Peanuts (I think I'm also partly inspired by Shirow's comics as well). I'm still trying to work out the looks and everything and etc...

As for my humor, maybe I was spending a little too much time in chatrooms and science joke sites. I'm not very sure what it could be.

What do you guys think? And also, who do you think inspired you?

The art was...kind of inspired by Dilbert (you probably wouldn't recognize it, unless you're very observant), and kind of by Tom Tomorrow.

The humor, well, a lot of it was influenced by "This Modern World"...I'm no political cartoonist but I guess that explains some of what I do. That and I read most of the "Ozy and Millie" archives and I thought it was kind of clever. It's hard to say though, a lot of people say my humor is very unique, and some just don't get it.

But that's pretty much it.

Storyline and humor: Roleplaying and chat rooms, definately.

Art... hard to say. I draw from so many influences I'm probably not even aware of it.

The art is inspired from a mix of government comics, Chinese painting, and anime.
Similar inspirations for story and humor, although that is also influenced by the weird world around me.

The mighty Berke Breathed.
Of course, I'm the one that isn't JP Sloan or Jim North.

I'd have to say that, looking at Kari & Doug, that one of my big influences would have to be Herg

The biggest influence on my comic is Douglas Adams, and he didn't even have a comic.

Shirow is the reason I draw cross-hatches across the face even when characters aren't embarassed. Even he doesn't do it anymore, but I'm used to it now.

Story wise, I draw more from films than from comics. Leon, A Better Tomorrow, Face Off, La Femme Nikita, Breathless, etc. Film noir is a heavy influence too, that's why I draw mine in greyscales.

Sluggy and Exploitation Now are the webcomics that had the most influence on me. E. Now showed you could have humour with a serious story.

Art:
Two main influences, amongst possibly many others but these are the two that stand out; Number one is the god that is J.Axer, his art, outlook on life and website is what got me to think "hey, this art lark looks nice,"
His site's been off the net for about two years now though... Still doesn't mean I can't bug him but still, it'd be nice to be able to show you guys how his mad skillz... Alas, all that's left is a temporary index... >sigh<

Next up is Zeddy, another of my gods, and Otaku-Ohki of Skidrow (now deceased). Mmmm ayup, as you've probably guessed, both anthro artists ^.^

Story influence:
Now this is a bit more varied. I suppose my biggest influence would be Half-Life (and real life ^.^ ) amongst others are Battle Royale, Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within and Band of Brothers. Band of Brothers simply for the brilliant filmography; never before have I seen modern combat portrayed so Damn Well. Resident Evil's another one, just for the sets and the lovely atmosphere it created which is going to become quite apparant in my comic some time soon. Oh, and Rework The Dead 1 and 2 by David Hopkins. Can't forget that one!

Hold on, I've got it figured out, I think my drawing style is partly inspired by Tin Tin comics... Herge is definitely the answer. Uh...

Actually, my style is pretty original. Why on earth would anyone have drawn the way I do? I actually came up with my own style. I did used to draw alot of dragonball, ninja turtles and asterix, but that was about 10 years ago.
(If my style reminds anyone of anything tell me. I can't think of anyone who draws similarly.)

My story is probably mostly influenced by fantasy authors I've read, such as Raymond E. Fiest, Janny Wurts and Sara Douglas. And my humour, uh what humour? Just sarcastic comments.

I want J.Axer to have my babies.

I've got his entire collection of pictures, comics, poems and writings he ever posted stashed on my hard-drive, except for his Sonic The Hedghog parodys, they got taken down before I could grab 'em. Hrmpf...

Here's a few favourites of mine since I really can't help but pimp his work ^.^

Familiar?
Squick!

And if you feel like reading one of his scritchy scratchy comics, just download this'un. His little paradoy of Celebrity Deathmatch!

I feel so dirty... Someone bathe me in sulphuric acid...

Bill Watterson and Berke Breathed are my primary influences (and they show!), but you could also add a whole slew of other stuff as well - mostly Pinky and the Brain and a lot of film.
