Getting hits?

Okay people with many hits on their sites, I am talking to you! How do you do it? Word of mouth takes too long, and I know I won't get hits from the forums.

What are some places (actual places, not generic locales) that I can go to to get my site listed?

My target audience is the outcast fringe, mainly grumpy teenagers. Does anyone know of any good sites, forums, weblink pages that I could go to for links?

How exactly to you approach someone to trade links? I am not the most outgoing person and I'm not sure what to do. ("Hi, I'm Christian. I like your site and wanna use you to link me.") How do you approach someone?

I know that I'm supposed to be doing this comic thing for the joy of doing it, but it doesn't do much for me when nobody reads it. I want readers! I want fame! I want some help!

Thanks

"HITS" don't mean jack, its the visits that you want.

Wording is moot, I want more people. Hits outside of keenspace are visiters per day, which annoys me to no end.

Well we get about 1000 visits/readers per day currently, though that's down considerably from a few months ago.

Anyways what I did was just get my name out there. Made friends with other comic artists, etc.

I went on the IRC channels of comics and talked to the artists directly, made friends, asked them to check my comic out, they liked it and plugged us.

Let's not forget that this is the internet after all, if there was some big secret to getting your name out there the secret would be out by now. I'm gonna have to stick to patience as your biggest bet. But you could always e-mail the big boys and ask them when they started to hit it big. They may not all give you an answer, but a few might and then you can share it with us.

Okay.. call me crazy(but I'm putting up FIVE-thousand dollars of my own money...heh.. I love Ben Stein) but has anyone thought of doing this yet. POSTERS!!! I'm making 3-4 different posters for September and getting friends to post my ads up at Universitys and High Schools. I think I'm covering 7 schools right now, I think it should get me a few people(I'm hoping for over 25, but hey, 2 more would be good). I dunno, I've just never heard anyone talk about real life advertisements. If I didnt live in such a crappy little hick town I'd spot a coupla bucks and get a radio commercial(50 bucks here for 25 spots I think... not sure tho). Hell it's not very often you see a commercial for a website on TV right? or advertised on a bulletin board somewhere around town... why not be in on the ground floor?(Because it won't work 24...shut up brain)

I'm not getting much visitors yet, but I'm working on it by printing Vegetarinat's URL and picture on T-shirts. (I bought those T-shirt transfer thingies..) I've also put my comics url to sites like http://www.humorlinks.com , http://www.milkandcookies.com and http://www.belfry.com/comics/. I've been searching comic link-pages with Google... :)
I've also considered printing some of the strips or making 'special pictures' and putting them all around my school when the holiday is over. :P You just have to be creative in advertising.

PS: I just realized that I could put your link on my site since that's a comic I read frequently... :)

You are my hero! I am trying hard to get to 100 vists average a day.
I had not even considered 1000 as a posibility.

I would be so thilled what that number of readers that
my feet would never touch the ground.

I am so impressed and inspired! I want that many readers.
Can I beg for a link? Yes....I am that shameless.

something a lot of you are missing out on here.. you need a decent comic too

getting people to visit once is easy, getting them to come back is where the challenge (and goal) lies.

Wow, that's actually something I had never thought of... real world advertising. So fresh, so new. Its ingenious. I'm going to start work right now. The Nobody Loves the Whiner Ad Campaign of Conversion Crusade starts now!!!

::marches triumphantly outside, gets the setting sun in his eyes and marches back inside::

Tomorrow at any rate....

Yeah, according to Matt Boyd, they averaged about 100 visits for the first year before they did a guest strip for MegaTokyo. After that they were an overnight sensation.

Well I might beable to. I'll look at it, but I do get 10-15 of these in my e-mail per week. Most of which aren't worth linking to. (not to sound like a jerk)

You don't sound like a jerk. You sound perticular and fussy.
Considering your getting over a 1000 visits a day, i think
you have earned the right to be a little choosy.

Could also be that I read so many comics as it is and don't usually have time to go through the archives of new ones, especially if they've been around for a while.

i haven't promoted my site in any way except i'm a member of superkeen, and none of my friends even know i have a comic, but i still manage about 150 hits a day.

I haven't begun to get the major hits to my site yet so I can't vouch that this will actually work but... I have the heart of a DIY Zinester so I made little flyers to throw around town or at concerts and stuff like that. Put em in the places where you think that you'd hit your target audience like coffee houses, independent record shops (FYE,the WALL,etc bad!), or if you have the guts, your local comic book shop. It may be scary but if you can't make an omlet without exposing yourself to the hardcore fanboys.

I use my email signature and my MSN name (http://las.no-ip.com - *Insert Something Funny here*) to advertise, as well as forums. When you have around a hundred people on your MSN list, you get at least a few hits :D .
