ok, the most important program is xmms and that is to listen to your fav jams while reading this. second of all is the GIMP. is about 80 percent photoshop, only a little more.....to the point.
the program that you want to use to resize your comic is "imagemagik" and to run it either go to freshmeat.net and download it or if you already think you have it just type in "display" in your shell. They last program i want to talk about is the xv. it is the fastest program to view the image youjust scanned. unlike gimp, which takes a fairly long time to boot up, xv gets going in about a sec so all you have to do is to view the image is "xv and the name of the image"<P>it pops up within seconds, it should come standard with linux as one of those needed aplications that comes when you install linux 7.0 along with the kde, 1 OR 2, doesnt matter.<P>
so, for all you linux people that know how to set up an apache server but dont know how to image manipulate your comics, that was the #1 way....remember, music comes first, then anything else. <P>so, now your not lost and you cant blame nate or Teri or Chris or scrubbo for not giving you any programs because your special and run linux....THATS RIGHT SCRUBBO, BLAMES ON YOU (jk.....)<P>note: yes i do use linux and yes, you just wasted a good 5 minutes reading it, mwahahahahaaaaa.......this message belongs in the egroup aswell.......yahoogroup, whatever<P>------------------

simplicity, fast loading and easy to remember keyboard shortcuts, but it's

Actually, I might use this info. I'm having some problems with Windows and my new hard drive, and I'm looking at Linux again lately, and well, I might switch to it as my main OS if certain items on my Linux wish list have appeared in the past year or so.<P>Those items are:<P><UL TYPE=SQUARE>
<LI> Support for my scanner! This was a biggy. My old Trust scanner seems to be tightly bound to Windows. Maybe Sane support has improved over the past year?
<LI> A Eudora-like email program that I can actually port my Eudora mailbox to and that is actually as good as Eudora, - or improvements in wine or vmware that will allow me to run Eudora itself. Last year, with Suse 6.1, it basically didn't work.
<LI>Improved desktop usability. THere's excellent choice and variety in Linux desktops, but little in the way of consistency, and I never could figure out how to make keyboard shortcuts to launch apps in any of them (essential because of my RSI). Perhaps this existed at the time but I just couldn't find it, or perhaps KDE 2, Gnome or Easel have introduced this now?<P></UL><P>------------------

Oh, you want to compare setups, eh? Here's what I use now:<P><B>Xfree86 4.0.2</B>, which handles Truetype fonts alot better than 3.3.6 w/xfstt<P><B>Gimp 1.2.1</B>, which has the GDynText feature built in. (HINT: Create the text first, and hit "apply". Then grab the mover and move the text over. Go back into the text box and hit the page-with-a-T button (make it go down), and do your next bit.)<P><B>Linux kernel 2.4.2</B>, which has better hardware support.<P>Head on over to the Open Source Cartooning lecture at Keenvention, and commment in the forum there.<P>------------------

HTML mode has to be up to date with the current spec to be better than what I use now - I don't think my current emacs HTML mode goes beyond 3.2<P>For CSS, I need some automated completion scheme or else it's no better than typing by hand. I do tend to forget brackets but my battered hands need a little more than that.

I'm looking at switching to Linux too, but I have the same concerns Reinder does, software support for my scanner and mouse. The scanner is a Canon FB363U, and the mouse, well I haven't decided yet, but this old two-button mechanical thing has got to go. <IMG SRC="http://www.keenspace.com/forums/smile.gif"> Could I use WINE? But wouldn't that kind of be defeating the purpose of switching to Linux in the first place?<P>Also, what's a good Linux pack? Good kernel, great GUI, nice selection of bundled apps, free or at least cheap?<P>------------------

My computer is now away for repairs, but before I kissed it goodbye, the guy in he shop pointed out two USB ports I'd never used <IMG SRC="http://www.keenspace.com/forums/smile.gif"><P>How's the USB support in Linux kernel 2.4? Can I hook up a big-name scanner or Wacom pad to it wihout problems?<P>------------------

USB support is fine, it's device drivers you need to worry about. Check with the peripheral's manufacturer to see if they provide drivers for Linux. If they don't, there may be an independent project distributing one, so check online.<P>------------------

a really good email client is called kmail and it comes standard with redhat7.0/kde2<P>
2 great html editors are emacs, xemasc (virtually the samething) and nedit, nedit is simple and really really fast to load.<P>
you might also want a really good ftp client and that is gftp, simply the best client out there....it is also standard witht he redhat7.0/kde2.<P>------------------
